Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Dark brown to black. Roast, piney hops, a bit burnt, rather dry, nice bitterness, medium-bodied. Quite nice and easy-drinking.

Can from M&S. Deep almost black colour with an off-white head. Aroma has roasted malt and slight pine. The taste is light sweet. Light gassy body.

33cl can from M&S, Tallinn. Pours dark mahogany with a fairly modest, beige head. Rather mild aroma; roasted malt and fruity hops, with hints of citrus and licorice. Moderate sweet with fairly low flavour intensity and also bitterness on the lighter side. Fair enough, but not too exciting.

Can from Marks & Spencer, Leeds. Black with an off-white head. Has some roasted malts in its nose, but less stated in its taste. Here there’s a light sweetness to what is a very easy-drinking textured ale.

Deep dark scary night black color with a tan head. Some lacing. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium body and a fine carbonation level. Semi dry texture and a fine bitterness. Coffee, roast, grapefruit hoppy, licorice and fruity flavor. The flavor felt a bit thin and had a quite short ending.

Can shared with the Mrs at Gatwick South Airport, sourced from M&S Gatwick (13/03/2017) - dark brown to black coloured pour with a beige head. Aroma and taste is roasted and sweet malty and vague hoppy, some cocoa notes, pretty basic stuff.

330ml can shared by Cunningham. Coal black body. No head. no lace. Dark malty aroma. Taste of liquorice and a backdrop of lemon. Dark malty ending with a bitter touch. Thin bodied. Ordinary stuff (Chelmsford, Hotel room 16.02.2017).

An interesting black pale ale. Tasty, with a nice mouth feel and a good flavour of malt. There was a gentle flavour of hops and it was nice, but not necessarily one to seek out again.

33cl can from M&S, Camberley. An opaque peaty brown pour with a loose cream head; sweet sugary aroma; contrasted by a sour grainy taste, with some well roasted malts giving some coffee and chocolate notes;then a rather lactic finish with some smoke. An odd beer.
