Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single to perhaps two centimetre tall light brown head that stays afloat barely quite nicely. Aroma of roasted malt, raisins, molasses, grapes, soy sauce, beef jerkey and a dose of heavier alcohol and astringent grain flavours, but the take-away is a deep robust pungent roasted malt note throughout. Medium-bodied; Super strong roasted malt flavour dominates with a raisin and prune sweetness right behind, a light hint of peated malt and bitterness from coffee show through with a good complexity of malts and alcohol for the duration. Aftertaste shows the light sweetnss from the caramelised sugars and molasses notes, but more of the graham cracker and toasted peat flavours of malt than anything else, but the soy sauce, raisin and fig flavours won't go anywhere either. Overall, a bit too thin and underwhelming in the malt department for this to be 'imperial', but perhaps too robust and deep/bittering to be a traditional stout. Nice to sample and slightly in-between styles here, but a good beer that feels more like a porter or a plain stout (mouthfeel) but by flavours, definitely shows more of an Imperial Stout, even at less than 8% abv. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 22-July-2016 for US$1,89 sampled at home in Washington a bit more than three years later on 20-September-2019.

12 ounce bottle. Opaque black pour. Small creamy tan head. Roasted malt nose. Notes of licorice and dark dried fruit. First sip is bittersweet dark chocolate. Hints of molasses, licorice and charred wood. Rich and complex with resiny hops in finish. Very well done. 7.9 ABV is well hidden.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/7/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of licorice, dark fruits, smoke, charcoal, leather, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of licorice, dark fruits, smoke, charcoal, leather, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; zero cloying, acrid, or astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roast/hop bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly silky/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.9%. Overall this is a fantastic American stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very rich and complex on malt flavors; with complimenting fruity yeast and earthy hops in the background. A spot on style example, and highly enjoyable offering.

Shared with me by Travlr. Thanks! Poured a very dark brown, almost black color with a small tan head. Aroma was lots of roasted malts, bitter dark chocolates. Coffee is in there, roasted. Didn’t expect something this tasty.

Draught at the brewery, 5/21/16.
Dark mahogany-to-ebony body seems fairly close to opaque. Dark tan head atop shows moderate retention.
Maple, mild woodsmoke, vanilla and bitter chocolate in the nose allow only a touch of light "sweetness". Crunchy, earthy, roasty and dark, there’s perhaps a hint of light alcohol, as well.
Quite dry in the flavor, dare I say too much so, but with some maple-chocolate-caramel character picking up on the finish, which simultaneously contains A LOT of ash. Like a ton of it. More than I’ve seen in any stout. That really ruined it for me, despite appreciating most of the rest of what the beer was doing.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Chocolate and licorice aromas. Soft with soy and licorice upfront turning to chard chocolate and espresso in the lasting finish.

Brown to black color. Tan head aroma is a total roast bomb. A little marshmallow aroma with coffee. Good mouthfeel. Brownies, cocoa, coffee. Finish is sweet with a bark like burnt toast flavor.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Prost, North Hampton, NH. Pitch black liquid with thin lasting mocha colored head displayed in the snifter. Aroma is mild roasted barley, hints of char, deep dark fruits.
The flavor shows charred grain, moderate coffee, chocolate hints. Keep in mind this is under 8 percent, great body right on the imperial line. The texture is dry roast with the char lingering a bit dry. It is indeed earthy. This is the best thing I have had from Long Trail in years! I could drink 3 or 4 of these in one sitting.
