Intensiver, trocken schokoladiger Beginn. Andeutungsweise alkoholisch, wenig intensive Holznoten. Sehr leicht herb, steigend süß. Weich, mild röstig, ganz leicht bitter. Nett. 8/10/11/11/12/11

Candy beer! Creamy, boozy, rather sweet but not annoyingly so. Cognac nicely adds another layer. A real Pohjala. Can I get a barrel?

(330ml bottle from kihoskh.dk) Pours pitch black with a small pale tan head and no lace. Aroma is sweet and rich with notes of cognac, molasses, dark chocolate, orange peels, fruit cake with light spices, figs, rather soft oak, slight earth, liqueur like but not too alcoholic. Rather sweet on the palate with lots of cognac character, quite fruity with layers of prunes, figs, candied orange peel, berries, atop dark toffee malt, sweet dark chocolate, subdued burnt malts and spicebox. Oaky tannic bitterness towards the finish, orange peel, roast, cognac and liqueur, a bit of heat but lower than ABV. Medium-full syrupy body with soft carbonation. Very nice extraction of the cognac barrel complemented by mystery spices, but the sweetness makes it a very slow sipper.

Bottle. Christmas gift from Sean at Beer Central. Cheers! Nearly black. Ring of tan head. Loads of legs. Nose has quality drinking chocolate. Toffee caramel. Vanilla oak. Cognac. Dates and fig. Smells like a big bowl of warm chocolate fondant sat next to a massive glass of warmed Cognac. Taste is sweet, rich and lightly boozy. Fair amount of barrel induced bitterness. Smooth, rich mouthfeel. Quite warming, but not to the tune of 14%. Gets a bit tooth numbing sweet toward the end, but overall it’s a nicely drinkable, silky impy.

Bottle split at Level 42, thanks to Daniel, 20/10/16. Black with a moderate tan covering. Nose is meaty malts, cocoa powder, charr, soy sauce, toffee, dark fruit esters. Taste comprises rich roast, sticky toffee, spice, charr, burnt notes, fruit loaf, boost. Full bodied, oily feel, sweet and sour licks in the close, subtle barrel, gin spice. Ok impy if a touch harsh.
