Time flies as they say, and we have reached the twentieth edition of our boundary pushing Abstrakt series of beers. It is going to be one for the ages too, as we are going to the metaphorical town on AB20. We have brewed a coffee milk English barley wine, and have blended this with an equally stunning barrel-aged imperial stout. So think liquid tiramisu, backed by a rich and decadent layer of warming alcohol. And much more besides.

Weird idea of a tiramisu beer - but then, what is weird in a world teeming with experimental craft beers... Bottle at Belgium Chimipalooza, thanks Guy for sharing. Loose and unstable, quickly vanishing, egg-white head over a hazy caramel brown beer with burgundy hue. Aroma of passionfruit, pear syrup, treacle, varnish, fresh paint, honey liqueur, black peppercorns, caramel, sweet sherry, hazelnut. Sweet, even somewhat syrupy candied date-like onset, pear and blackcurrant notes, hot alcohol effect palpable from the start with a harsh, unpleasantly astringent solventy effect (nail polish remover), very soft carb (if not flat). Slick caramelly and toffeeish malt body, liquorice and clove notes, low in bitterness while the sweetness sticks and the booze, in a moonshine-like way, keeps overpowering. Sweet, sticky barleywine, in itself not a bad thing if you like strong dessert beers, but way too boozy for its own good, even for the style; not too much tiramisu to be found here either, unless with imagination. There are better works of art in this series, even if it remains an interesting and bold idea - have an extra point for that.

Bottle shared in BDSB - cheers! Pours brown with a small, foamy tan head. The nose has chipotle, roast, chocolate. Huge sweet flavour, cloying, with more smoked red pepper, oily chocolate, brown sugar, syrup. Medium to full bodied, oily and chewy, with soft carbonation. Warming finish, sticky sweet, with more oily sugar syrup. Pretty damn sweet and a bit basic. Enjoyable at a basic level. (March 2018, score: 3.5)
Tried it again in 2023 and liked it a fair bit more, even with the age. Nice stewed dark fruits, toffee, vanilla, prunes, raisins. Bumping the score up to 3.7.

Bottled 14.03.2016. brown color. very small tean head. smells of rum, herbal, light booze, nutty, earthy, liqueur, almost smoky, cinnamon, licorice, grassy. very nice smell. full body, basically no carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes earthy, nutty, some cinnamon, sweetness, caramel, wood, rum, some booze, peppery, dried fruits. finishes medium sweet with notes of rum, nuts and cinnamon. very nice one, very heavily sweet though, balance could be a bit better, but overall nice complexity. nice cinnamon notes.

Bottle, 375 ml from Pivoteka. courtesy of JFK10000. Pours brown, no head. Very nice chocolate aroma, nuts, caramel, dried fruit, molasses, warming, quite sweet. Bit oily, doft carbonation. Medium to full bodied. Seems that about a year in a bottle did good to this one.

Light brown with an orange tint, minimal head. Chilli, malts, spice, alcohol, some chocolate and figs. Alcoholic and sweet. Full body, smooth, warming, moderate finish. Spicy, nicely done, but not impressive.

Almost clear deep amber beer, no real head. Palate is smooth and slightly viscous, mild superfine carbonation. Nice burned sugar, caramel and vanilla. Little spice. Toffee on the back end. Caramel liqueur underneath. Quite a light finish. Very nicely done, it's a big beast of a beer but very drinkable and I enjoyed every sip.

Abstrakt 01 - 25 Vertical @ Brewdog Sheps Bush. Just a few months on for me and this beer, age seems to have done nowt but reduced carbonation. Weaker in the short term. 3.4

Sample at SBWF 2017. Hazy brownish with a minimal head. Very sweet with toffee, light oak, some fruit and vanilla. The body was full and the finish long.
