Barley wines are traditionally hefty brews, but ours is downright excessive. The huge maltiness of this beer is only tamed by an equally prodigious addition of hops, creating a rich, slightly sweet, caramel-hued ale infused with assertive bitterness and bright hop notes, all culminating in a pleasing dryness. While it will evolve into an even more glorious brew with age, this beer's delicious onslaught of flavors will seriously challenge your ability to wait any longer to drink it.

From Nov 2007

This is the early release 2007

It pours from 22oz bottle a hazy copper colour with a 1 finger head of foam. The foam recedes to a fine broken layer and it has some nice lacing.

The smell is of caramel and roasted malt, citrus hops, and some fruit.

The taste has big notes of caramel malt, roasted malt, grapefruit hop bitterness, some molasses, some dark fruit: fig, toffee, a bit of plum...very complex and boy, it has an alcohol kick to it that really warms during and after the swallow. I like how the malt and hop character are nicely balanced and makes it, despite the agressive flavours, a smooth sipping BWSA. Really nice stuff! Oh, and the alcohol becomes less noticeable further into the session.

The mouthfeel is nice and thickish and the carbonation is on the light side. It finishes semi sweet.

Bottom line: A very tasty and enjoyable example of the style indeed. I wouldn't hesitate in buying more. Another great job by Stone Brewing!

Schade! Aus dem Growler (Vintage 2009) im 2018-01 getrunken. 8/4/4/5/8 Dieses 2009er ist überraschend stark gehopft. Nein das hier gefällt mir gar nicht.

22 oz bottle shared by Gregis, early 2007 Vintage. Pour is golden orange with a smallish off white head. Nice lacing left on the glass. Aroma of soft perfumey toasted caramel with decent orange citrus bitterness. Taste is malty caramel, apple fruit sweetness with pine hop and honey orange bitterness. Nice mineral grainy earthiness to the finish. There is a hint of the Stone yeast, more of the earthy mineral flavor. Palate is medium, mouth coating, alcohol present in the long finish. Nice one, thanks for sharing this one with me Greg.

2007 Bottle from Systembolaget (temporary product) The smell remindes of an old cellar. Red and clear. A bit rough in taste and to much alcohol, like barley wines often are when young. But I think it has potential and will mature well!

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm 14 Sep 2007) Amber colour with brief off-white head. Fruity nose with peaches, mandarin, orange and generous amounts of rubbery hops. Fruity taste with notes of orange, mandarin and loads of rubbery, floral hops in the finish. Slightly vinous, sweet with hints of marzipan. Massive, chewy beer, but still with balance. Magnificent!

2007 Edition: I mean, there is a freakin’ picture right there, so I do not need to really describe nothing right... well anyway, don’t pour it into a trappiste glass cause you ain’t gonna get no head proper right. Anyway, onto the beer: hella fuckin’ fruity smell. You know this beer is going to be freakin’ sweet right. Well anyway, the taste at first strikes you for the bitterness. But you know, there is hella more. I mean its like, there is bitterness, but guess what, there is also other shit and you gotta learn to deal right. It’s like full of all sorts of flavours that I can only say are delicious, hella fuckin’ delicious. This is a slow drinkin’ brew; you can’t swill this obviously and if you attempt it you ought to just go to a different website. Panaply of flavors, all of which I savour. Better this than something else, let us all indulge ourselves. Whatever, this beer rocks my socks.
