Twelve months ago we set out to brew a big, thick, sweet stout with the sole intention of ageing in bourbon barrels we had arriving (a mixture of George Dickel, Wild Turkey, Four Roses and others). It hasn’t disappointed! If you like your stouts with plenty of barrel pick up and residual sweetness, this one’s for you.

330ml bottle. Pours jet black with a small head. Aroma is heavy bourbon and sweet milk chocolate. Taste has sweet vanilla to start with a bourbon and chocolate finish. Drinks below its strength. Lovely stuff.

Opaque dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is smooth, semi dry and has decent fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, fairly sweet. A little dark chocolate and vanilla. Good fruity bourbon and a whisper of coconut. Chocolate cake. Light semi dry finish. Nice beer but a tad sweet even for me.

Bottle. Black beer, naff all head. smells of coffee, chocolate, vanilla and spirits. There’s a big whack of vanilla up front in the flavour, milk chocolate, a bit of coffee, honey and you get the bourbon through in the aftertaste, though there’s a slightly sickly sugary taste at the back too. Rich, creamy and smooth. This is absolutely delicious.

Bottle at home picked up from Mad squirrel Berko. A viscous jet black coloured pour with a lasting fine mid tan head. Aroma is big boozy woody bourbon whiskey, rich boozy fruit cake, dates, dark choc, burnt milk. Delicious nose. Flavour is composed of medium sweet, milk chocolate, lactose sugars, smooth oak and vanilla, little tangy fruit cake, little grape. Palate is medium sweet, milky, rounded full bodied, warming alcohol . Creamy mouth feel. Couldn’t drink a lot of this as it’s a bit too sweet for my taste.

Keg at Heidrun. HW, 01/04/17 and also at the Euston Tap (West Lodge) 16/03/17. Pitch black with a solid tan head. Nose is chocolate, vanilla, maltesers, light spice, bourbonic stained oak. Taste comprises chocolate melt, vanilla, chocolate milkshake, splash of molasses, melted brown sugar gloop, mellow bourbon tones. Full bodied, fine carbonation with an oily feel, light warming alcohol in the close. Solid well balanced BA impy stout ... a touch too sweet to be a great for me but sips mighty fine.

Bottle shared at Viniloteca. Very dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Notes of bourbon, sugar, honey, booze and a bit of alcohol. Too sweet and lacking in complexity.

Keg at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Pours black-brown with a frothy, beige head. The nose holds sugary milk chocolate, light roast. Hugely sweet flavour, syrupy chocolate, minimal bitterness, molasses, raisins. Full bodied, chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes with minimal warmth, more sugary chocolate, more molasses and rains, marshmallow, almost no bitterness. Really sweet overall. Enjoyable in moderate doses.
