Twelve months ago we set out to brew a big, thick, sweet stout with the sole intention of ageing in bourbon barrels we had arriving (a mixture of George Dickel, Wild Turkey, Four Roses and others). It hasn’t disappointed! If you like your stouts with plenty of barrel pick up and residual sweetness, this one’s for you.

330ml bottle: shared between five at the March 2017 meeting of the Shrewsbury Bottle Exchange Group in Chez Sophie. Thanks Paolo for this offering. Black pour, tanned topping. Nose had a bourbon ester or two alongside some chocolate and vanilla notes. The taste was sweet with again a blend of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Viscous body, almost teeth covering in fact, smooth and rich for sure. My sweet tooth loved it although a whole bottle to myself would have been too much, even at the 330ml level.

330ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, courtesy of Paolo. Pours a deep brown, small tan head. Bourbon and choc nose. Taste is layered, complex bourbon, chocolate with good nutty / vanilla bourbon loitering around on the finish. Quite rich, sweet, palate-coating.. intense stuff, perhaps too much.

Bottle at home, 19th March 17. Pours thick, black, rich and slick. Aroma is vanilla, bourbon, slight liquorice, chocolate truffle. Taste is rich, sticky, sweet. Too sweet for me, bourbon, vanilla, slight barrel, chocolate cake, cloying, sticks to your lips sweetness. Rich and hard to get through. Palate is luxurious and thick. Far to sickly sweet for my taste.

Bottle from Euston Tap West. It pours jet bcy with decent tan head. The aroma is rich, sweet, sticky, creamy, milk chocolate, maltesers, crunchy, vanilla toffee and cookie dough. The taste is slick, sweet, sticky, quite fruity, fruit cake, sweet vanilla, bourbon, toffee, sugar puffs, creamy action, milk chocolate, maltesers and rocky road with a slick, sweet finish. Full body, fine carbonation and soft mouth - feel. Rich and sweet, yet drinkable. For me this is a bit too sweet, but I can appreciate those with a sweeter tooth creaming their jeans over this. Good fun nonetheless.
