The doppelbock style of lager came into being in Middle Ages era Bavaria in what is today southern Germany. It was originally brewed by monks to provide themselves with a liquid form of nutrition during the fasting period of Lent when no solid food was allowed. This has earned the doppelbock the nickname "liquid bread" because of its rich and filling capacity. The Thomas Hooker Doppelbock Lager blends huge amounts of imported Munich, Vienna and Moravian malts with select dark roasted malts to achieve a malt lover’s dream of a rich and creamy brew. Subtly hopped with noble German and Czech hops and cool fermented with a Bavarian lager yeast, this beer will leave you happy to give up solid food for a while. No dessert necessary.

RB# 1400: 50 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a lacing light brown head. Malty nose with a minor but distinct apple/citrus fruitiness. Heavy flavour of roasted malt and a slight herbal note, clearly lifted by alcohol without becoming dominant at all. Bitter and still malty in the finish.

Dark brown color. Some sweet caramel aroma and flavor; good body strength; too much alcoholic, too simple.

Poured a dark brown, nearly black, with caramel colored edges with a spotty off white head. Smells of malt and yeast, with a hint of flowers and sugar. Flavor was wonderful, heavy roasted malt to start that fades into a nutty, bready, grainy finish. Very smooth transition, refreshing textured finish. Great example of the style.

Bottle. Cherry, prune, malt, and a rum-like alcohol aroma. Ruby brown with small head. Sweet prune/dried cherry aroma with a moderate hops and alcohol burn to finish. Nice dopplebock - smoother than typical.

Thanks to jjpm74 for the trade (1 L bottle). Nose is roasty, spicy malts; transparent dark brown with a small tan head; coffee and malt dominate the flavor with a small smoky accent, and a note of dark fruit, and a hint of hop bitterness in the finish along with a little alcohol.

[tap at Spuyten Duyvil] It’s nice to see this brewery is finally in the NY market, and this was quite a nice introduction - smooth, creamy and full-bodied - a nice, floral/spicy quality, coupled with a pleasant caramel/munich malt sweetness made this a pleasure to drink - welcome to NY Thomas Hooker!

Aged 1 year -> a step above fresh. Prune and pit fruit aromas and flavors prevail. Creamy with a lasting bitter milk dud finish. Delicious - best dopplebock I’ve tried. Fresh -> Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Malted chocolate notes. Lasting micro head that leaves slight lacing. Smooth, creamy and soft. Toasted caramel. 8/8/8/4/17 = 4.1

Very lightly hopped. A fairly thick beer; it has a standard bock aroma of carmel. Sweet. Heavy palate, and a good bock. But I am surprised to see it rated as highly as it is.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color beer with a huge brown foamy head with perfect retention. Aroma of roasted malt with some butterscotch. The roasted caramel malt with subtle hints of banana also dominates taste. Body is above average but could have been fuller and carbonation was at the right level for the style. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall, this is a very good beer but would have appreciated a bit more complexity (more chocolate, more banana).
