We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.
Description: Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer’s art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish.

12 ounce bottle from the summer sampler. Pours a crystal clear pale golden color with a thin head that fades quickly. Faint aroma of grain and some pale malty notes. The taste is grainy with some nutty notes and a faint caramel finish. Very faint leafy hops in the finish. Medium bodied. Decent.

Draught at their Logan Airport Taproom. Faint aroma of grains and a bit of grass. Light, grassy flavor with ok malt. Thin, but ok summer refreshment. Uninteresting overall.

On tap at flying saucer. Pours a clear yellow gold with a small white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is a sweet wheat malt and honey. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet malt with a nice crisp finish. Easy to drink, a good kolsch from Harpoon.

Tap @ Boston/NY 2009. Clear golden color, short head. Aroma of some hop and malt. Clean slight bitter taste. Bit boring.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Thanks for the tick! Pours light gold with a large fluffy white head. Nice clean smell of grassy hop. Medium minus body with light, creamy carbonation. It’s thinnish. It’s very mildly fruity, finishing with mild noble hop bitter. Goes down easy.

Overall Impression: Have had this one a few different times, though not recently. I’m surprised I haven’t rated it previously. This is a fairly simple beer. It makes for a decent summer session beer. It just doesn’t go much beyond that.

No aroma to speak of, save for a bit of DMSed canned peas. Shimmering yellow, medium white head. Tangy lemon and lemon zest flavor. DMS and grain is left on the palate.

bottle - Pours golden with a one finger white head. It smells of light, slightly fruity malt with a touch of hops. Flavor is a biscuity sweet malt with a touch of crisp hops that obviously come through more in the finish. It’s pleasant for warm weather as intended, but it’s certainly nothing to write home about...

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma consists of medium sweet malt with the distinctive Kolsch style yeast. Taste is also a mix between some medium sweet malt with some unrefined grainy notes and the distinctive Kolsch style yeast that I have a hard time to describe. Well done and very refreshing.

Bottle. Unleashes a pointless gold body with a big and fluffy white head... looks a little soapy and aromas confirm this. Smells almost like a \"fresh breeze\" dryer sheet. Soapy aroma with some lemon and something chemical that would best be described as \"spring breeze\" Flavor is a tragic case of imitation of the nose: lemon and grass flavors are gobbled up by the spring cleaning-like flavors of pine sol and lemon cleaner with plenty of soap throughout (although it becomes even more pesky in the aftertaste). Most of this is cleaning the drains of my house right now.
