We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.
Description: Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer’s art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish.

On tap at Barley’s Ale House #1. The Kölsch is not an overly complex style but I enjoy it for being straightforward and refreshing. Unfortunately Harpoon’s version is overly simple. Clear golden color with a thin white head and minimal lacing. Light hops and lemon aroma. Light-bodied with a minimal hops flavor, along with some grass and citrus. The finish is clean and a little tart, but short. This beer is not memorable despite being pretty easy to drink.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) An American Kölsch, that’s a first time for me, but actually this beer is not that far the German original. Straw golden in colour, light and refreshing with a soft malty sweetness and only a hint of hops. Good choice as a summer thirst quencher.

Slightly hazy goldenrod colour with a very thin white head. Sweet aroma with plentiful malt and a bit of metal. Light-bodied; Sweet initial flavour fading fast, but leaving some malt and metallic nuances. Aftertaste actually bland, bitter and offensive. Overll, not a good summer beer, but not the absolute worst. I got this twelve ounce bottle at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 10-October-2003.

Had this several years ago and didn’t think much of it. Now, the re-rate. Bright golden colour with a light head. Orangey-apricotty nose. Balanced palate with fresh orangey hop and melon and a backbone of breadcrusty malts. Clean, refreshing, a nice brunch beer.

2002 bottlebetter than i expected. Light, very light. gold kolsch, i had this when i had Sierra SummerFest. it didnt stand up, but maybe a better choice for the casual drinker. Grassy and clean. 2003 draft in boston Well this certainly was alot better than the bottle I tried last year in Rochester. Initial taste is sharp with some sour hops/yeast flavor that adds a meaty punch up front and was very pleasant. The beer finished off even and had some sweet and yeasty notes throughout. The body stood up well and did not thin out.
