Bottle. A really good beer. The syrups that were used could be smelled and tasted but were not over powering but pleasantly presented.

Single from the Mills River fridge, stamped 050919. Pint glass at home. Quick & pretty cascade. Thin, tall beige head over a dark but clear, brown highlighted body. Nose is mostly cola & holiday fig. Acidy start. Charred syrup all up in it, toasty middle, sugary cola sweetness, spiced fig(?), oak smoke, lingering earthy bitter bite. Just a touch drier than it was but a lot thinner. Fizzy, sharp, roasty, sweet, thin, belly warmth is quite smooth. Time has made this one better than good.

From a 473ml can on 23/8/2021. Pours a deep mahogany with a medium head. Smells a bit malty with a good dash of caramel and some light maple syrup. Tastes quite sweet up front - herwe the maple syrup is more pronounced (can't comment on what birch syrup tastes like), with some caramel and burnt toffee. Finishes with a firm bitterness which is true to the strong ale style, and a touch of warming alcohol. The mouthfeel is a touch syrupy, the carbonation moderate. A very solid big beer.

Can. 2019 version dawdled its way into town. Very dark brown with a good inch of beige head that sticks around and laces. Aroma of strong bread, dried and stewed fruit, dark sugars. Full bodied, moderate carbonation. Sweet with bread and stewed fruit, then singed notes that restrain the sweetness and dry things a little before moderate bitterness. Some sweetshop spices. No overt alcohol. Like many a beer associated with SN, seems a local translation of good English and Scottish ideas rather than an attempt at a copy. A characterful, dreamy brew.

Can. A- Caramel, tree bark, malt. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, beige head. T- Malt, mild spice, woodsy, burnt toast, subtle alcohol. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Not sure on this one. Honestly not a lot of flavor that stands out. What does birch even taste like? Okay beer but not complex or outstanding.

Pint can, poured dark ruby brown with tan head. Full bodied. Chocolate and maple aroma. Chocolate taste upfront, licorice in the middle, then birch flavor hits at the finish with some booziness.
