Tap @ Arendsnest. Deep golden color. Dried fruit and a hint of new oak in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with lots of new oak, alcohol, dried fruit and bubblegum. I can’t really taste the Bruichladdich, but this is a seriously good beer.

Special, Bruichladdich-barrel aged version of La Trappe Quadrupel celebrating the 25th anniversary of the basic beer and therefore of the word ’quadrupel’ itself; only made available in kegs and not bottled, so an altogether different beer from the 25th batch of the ’ordinary’, bottled La Trappe Oak Aged series. Tasted from tap at Cultuurcafé Berlare during their yearly Trappistenfeesten, thanks tderoeck for the tip. Thick, beaten egg-like and egg-white, dense, stable, cobweb-lacing head over a hazy, warm amberish bronze beer, of about the same hue as the ordinary Quadrupel. Aroma of caramel candy, whisky, dry banana and a hint of bubblegum, brown rum, vanilla-ish oak, almond cake, dried apricot, white pepper, some light but unmistakable Bruichladdich peat when warming up, earthy touch of cooked carrot. Sweet onset, tad bubblegummy with lots of fruity hints (banana, peach, fresh fig, ripe pear), soft gooseberry-ish sourish undertone, quite fizzy carbo but not overcarbonated, smooth, thick, bit resiny mouthfeel. Full caramelly malt sweetness in the middle with lingering residual sugary sweetness accentuating it, softening bready edges with the breadiness increased a bit by the suspended yeast; so far very akin to the basic beer, but then, in the finish, gaining more complexity from vanilla-ish oak tannins, subtle retronasal peat and a lot of heating, clearly but not overpoweringly whisky-like alcohol (including whisky flavour) over some herbal, earthy yeast and hop bitterishness. Rich, deep and lush quadrupel, very well done with the peat and the whisky itself, though very clearly identifiable, put on top of the basic beer as an added layer of flavour rather than completely penetrating it. Glad I made a stop in Berlare after work for this, I’ll probably never have the chance to try this again...

Draft - Soft peaty notes with plum and raisin. Clear copper with a small beige head. Peat and a wonderful sweet backbone. I can’t believe this works so well, truly balanced and nice.

Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen (3rd Year Birthday week) Amber pour with thin white head. Sweet malty aroma and taste with a plethora of dried fruit, some caramel, a slight smokey edge, some nice resonating whisky soaked oaked wooden accents coming into the close. Very nice, great to have tried this rare hard to find beer outside the Netherlands.
