Matt Vandenberghe and Matt Bonney of Brouwers/Bottleworks trekked over to Colorado to attend the Great American Beer Festival and made their way over to Fort Collins to pay New Belgium a little visit. Along with “some of the Click Distributing guys, their guys and Dave and Jennifer Keane (from the Toronado),” they did a full tasting of each and every one of [New Belgium’s] foedres.”
Bonney and Vandenberghe decided on a blend of three beers from foedres #3 , #13, and #2 .
According to New Belgium Sensory Expert, Lauren Salazar, “This one actually used both our dark and light base beers – we usually use the dark for La Folie and the light for Eric’s Ale and Le Terroir, but they found a nice blend of both- old, mid and young barrels. After Eric blended and filtered he dosed the bottles and kegs with Brettanomyces Lambicus (not our house strain of brett), this one is known for its barnyard aromas- they really wanted to bring in the funk.”

Bottle. Blindtasting @ Thewolf. Pours a cloudy copper with a off white creamy head. Tart, vinous, oak, earthy, brett nose. Very dry with a bit of vinegar. Fine balance. Bone dry and fresh.

From bottle, blind #9, courtesy of thewolf. Pours dark brown to golden orange with a small tan head. Aroma is dry acidic and fruity. Distinct barnyard too. Acidic, spiced and sour flavoured. Light malt base. Sour to acidic flavoured finish. Smooth and yet with a light acetone bite.

Very nice, acidic aroma. In the Flanders Red style. Tons of yeast in this beer, both in the aroma and flavor. Cloudy, dark orange color. Fruit, some balsamic, and very good, sour flavor. Comparable to La Folie for sourness.

750mL shared by theisti, thanks so much Tim. Pours is a small head atop a thick orange body that one cannot see through. Aroma is strong burnt tire, nothing like La Folie with a bit of aceto (nail polish). It isn’t too strong but there. There is a bit of faint cherry as well. Taste has more tartness coming through with lots of cherry and aceto. Its got a little bit of a La Folie feel but in a dirty stepchild kind of way. The acetic stuff is there but worked well into the beers profile. Its good stuff all around but not at the level this beer is going for. Really glad I got to try it, thanks again Tim.

750 ml bottle kindly sent to me by bvc. Pour is orange ruby hazed, not much of an off-white head. Aroma is lemon citrus, bright sour, funky musty spicy yeastiness and some dusty floral element behind that. Taste is bright sour, funk earthiness, orange juice, mostly very acetic. Bright, big sour - much more sour than tart, though it is certainly both of those things. Palate is medium, surprisingly drinkable for this big of a sour. Overall, this beer seemed like it was somewhere between the La Folie and Foerder in terms of sour character. I like both of those beers, so this one was all good. Thanks for grabbing this one for me Brandon, I am glad I got to try it.

Big thanks to Americanbrew for bringing this. Pours with a large, foamy, off-white head over a hazed amber body. Aroma is funky with horse blanket, citrus-sour. Very lambic like. Taste is very sour with mostly a citrus-sour note and lighter funk. Awesome. Light carbonation.

Sample at O-town throwdown ’09 Pours hazy orange. Aroma has ample tartness and funk with subtle nose of cherry. Taste, sour and fruity (cherry) Overall palate was light with residual faint notes of wood. Could be La Folie’s little sister.
