We’ve discovered through delicious experimentation the delectably roasty character that comes from adding coffee beans to just about any beer style. For this traditional yet worldly stout, the mild bitterness of the roasted coffee is balanced out brilliantly by milk sugar, adding a touch of sweetness and creaminess. Cheers to the artful coalescence of two highly artisanal mediums.
Several unique things about this formulation make the beer special, including the addition of San Diego coffee roaster Ryan Bros.’ coffee beans in the mash. We also use British mild ale malt as the base malt and the addition of milk sugar, which brewer’s yeast does not ferment. These components add some body and a touch of sweetness to the resulting beer. At only 5% ABV, some might expect this beer to be thin, but that’s far from the truth; it is a smooth and satisfying beer.

(Draught at Beer Temple, Amsterdam, 26 Feb 2017) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and some liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with black coffee, dark chocolate, black rye bread and a dry finish with a balanced coffee bitterness. Medium body, dry. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
