Paul, who is still our Chairman, and in our eyes is warden of all things beer, founded the Brewery in 1992, fighting back against what he saw as a deluge of bland beer from mass corporations. The result was the creation of one of Britain’s favourite breweries and more than 100 jobs in the town of Masham.

Pathmaker will reach out to a wider drinking audience and tell the Black Sheep story in a modern and creative way. The beer is aimed at pubs and bars offering new and different beer brands to increasingly curious beer enthusiasts.

With its eye-catching hand drawn branding, Pathmaker is a 5.6% ABV pale ale, brewed with Chinook hops, with an adventurous malty mouth feel and a moreish, crisp bitter finish.

33cl can. Poured a crystal clear straw colour with a thin white head. The aroma is malt, grassy citrus hop. The flavour is moderate bitter light sweet with a dry crisp, fresh fruity, light dry pepper spice, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Can from ASDA, Halifax. Golden-yellow with a head. Mainly hoppy with a dryness to this, but there's a very light stewed tropical fruitiness evident too.

330ml can:BB 14th Mar 18. Poured into my huge ’Judas’ glass at home on 2nd Aug 17. Clear golden body, white topping with a ’medium’ retention span. Hoppy nose with both piney and citrusy leanings. Taste is also hop centric, yet the light malty base comes through in the mouth also. Decent enough blend, liked it.

Bottle: Golden, a bit unclear, small and stable white head, moderate flowery-hoppy nose with a juicy malty background; quite dry bitter-sweet flavour, malty base detectable, light bodied and a bit tart; slightly adstringent bitter-grapefruity finish with an "english" touch. Good session beer...

Bottle from Asda. Golden in colour with a slight, white, head. Sweet citrus hop aroma. Flavours of sweet cereal malts clashed with sharp citrus fruit in a jarring manner, before a dryish finish. Ok.

Bottle from Tesco, Longford [070517]
Golden, soft haze, frothy white head
Aroma of soft lemon, hint of grassy hops, getting a herbal note
Taste of soft herbal bit earthy hops - like cut plant stem, some grassy hops, touch of mineral, pale soft sweet malts
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, bit oily, soft bitter, slight alcohl. Finish of soft herbal hops, cleans off palate
Overall - OK, not all that keen on the herbal hops flavour profile, but not bad
