NEON is a Brut IPA of 7% ABV, brewed in collaboration with Brasserie de L’Ermitage from Brussels and Garage Beer Co from Barcelona in Spain. It is part of a special six-pack of beers—the Noble Gas Project—created with twelve other breweries to celebrate the third birthday of Siphon Brewing. Working with Siphon Brewing on the recipe and process beforehand and attending on brewday were Nacim Menu, François Simon and Henri Ben Saria from Brussels brewery L’Ermitage and Owen Ashmore from Garage Beer Co in Barcelona. NEON showcases the bright and juicy tropical fruit notes of the Ekuanot, Mosaic and Amarillo hop varieties used in late addition and dry-hop, with a bone-dry attenuation and crisp carbonic bite.

Levendig donkergeel bier met mooie schuimkraag. Smaak is bitter hoppig met iets van gras en graan. Een fijn bier.

One of the six 'noble gas beers' by Siphon, each one a festive collaboration with two other breweries, in this case two young top talents, namely Ermitage from Brussels and Garage from Barcelona joining forces in this brut IPA hopped with Ekuanot, Mosaic and Amarillo - one of the very first brut IPAs made in Belgium (but not actually the first...). Mousy, medium thick, egg-white, slightly irregular head opening in the middle with islands of foam remaining, on a misty peach blonde beer with slightly salmon-pinkish tinge. Fragrant, tropical nose of guava, ripe mango, pink grapefruit, ripe peach, granadilla, lychee, dried leek, white bread dough, lime flesh, hints of toasted shallot, some dank 'diesel', Thai basil, dried ginger, green house plants. Crisp, bright onset, lovely 'clean' fruity notes of grapefruit flesh, mango, lychee and pineapple, sweetish in a merely aromatic way because further on, the typical dryness of the style comes to the foreground, over a medium carbonated, doughy, very softly edged, oily and supple middle built by soft cereally-sweetish maltiness with light bread pulp edges; any diacetyl mentioned by some raters below has apparently long gone now. Growing hoppiness meanwhile supports the natural dryness of the beer, adding a herbal and citric, long-stretching and lively yet nowhere harsh bitterness - and of course a retronasal wave of sweet onions, yellow citrus and lychee, bright and generous, colouring the beer bright yellow and pale green, so to speak. Some hot alcohol effects are noticeable in the tail, a tad wry almost which shouldn't be this obvious in a 7% ABV beer, but given the overall brightness, elegance and beauty of this IPA, I do not really mind it this time. Powdery, spicy yeast hints remain alongside this alcoholic effect and lingering tropical hoppiness. If this is truly a brut IPA, the enzyme amyloglucosidase must have been added, and indeed, in spite of the malts' natural sweetishness and the deceptively sweet aromas provided by these tropical-scenting hop varieties, the mouth cavity is eventually dried to a very high degree, so in that sense, mission accomplished. The trend created by Social Kitchen & Brewery in San Francisco in (only) 2018 may not have conquered the heart of the average beer geek so far in the way some overly enthusiastic sources predicted (this is made clear enough by some of the ratings below as well), but it is refreshing to see some brewers turn away from the now-ubiquitous New England IPA and have a go at this potentially promising concept; as said, this is only the second or third attempt to my knowledge in Belgium so far, but comparing this one with other brut IPAs I had (also from abroad), I can only conclude that it is a damn fine example. Third time in a row Siphon pleasantly surprises me with this series - even if it is thanks to others joining in with their own expertise - so man, am I glad that there are three left to try... Quite a stunning beer, once again, just one point off for the badly hidden alcohol.

Draft @ BBP Taproom.

Bottle picked up from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, nr Ghent, Belgium, consumed at home, Attenkirchen, Thursday 12th September 2019. Cooking Steak, Caramelised Onion and Red Pepper Mustard Pies and listening to Steve Lamaq and'Roubd Table' on 6Music. Aroma is very subtle, not getting too much at all. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Nice bitterness, really good, great balance but good pithy citrus edge. Nice soft mouthfeel, loving the hop combination of Ekuanot, Amarillo and Mosaic. This is a lovely little beer, hoppiness and hoppy burps aplenty.

Sampled in between ratebeer and brewver, so not much specific tasting notes. This brut IPA showcases how it's supposed to be done, characteristically dry, yet a clear fruityness from the hops. Very recognizably Belgian in both balance and taste though, which I would prefer differently for any style of IPA but Belgian style, But i assume this is what they were aiming at, so I can only say they succeeded in making a good, Belgian style Brut IPA
