Imperial smoked Stout aged in bourbon barrels.

Wood Burner imperial smoked stout aged in bourbon barrels. Over the years we have brewed a plethora of bit stouts and porters, and the idea of brewing an imperial smoked stout was something we had been kicking around for a while. When an open brew day presented itself, we knew exactly what to do. The base stout focuses on rich caramel and chocolate notes with a deep savory/smoky backbone. The entire batch found its way into bourbon barrels, where it rested for over a year. An enticing combination of sweet and savory, with waves of dark chocolate and vanilla that wash over the palate. Cheers to stoking the creative flame in all of us!

Bottle, many thanks Erzengel! Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma is barrel sugar, cocoa, chocolate, coffee, caramel, vanilla, toasted wood. Taste is chocolate, cocoa, barrel sugar, vanilla, toasted wood. Oily mouthfeel with low carbonation. A bit too light-bodied for the barrel, or too much barrel for the body.

Many thanks to jtclockwork for sharing. Woody caramelly nose. The beer starts fresh and smooth. Mild with chocolate, alcohol, intense deep with lots of chocolate and smooth malt. Deep long, malt, chocolate with still a high drinkability.

Smoked imperial stout aged on bourbon barrels. Thick and moussy, pale greyish beige head, black robe with thin hazy burgundy edges. Aroma of milk chocolate, treacle, vanilla-scenting bourbon, chestnut cream sauce, baked banana, brown rum, coconut, whisky-soaked raisins, glue and indeed a touch of smoked bacon, but subtle. Sweet onset, candied dates, chestnuts, figs coated in chocolate - with a very light sourish accent to it fitting in very well. Soft carbonation, thick and syrupy, oily mouthfeel; deeply nutty and chocolate bar-like maltiness, much more sweet than bitter but still with a softly roasted bitter 'coffeeness' to it in the end; sugars linger, coconut candy- and marzipan-like almost, with the smokiness again remaining understated; oaky tannins including vanilla, the latter enhanced by the bourbon, further adorn the finish, detailed by some varnish-like solvents and a strong, long afterglow of whisky-like alcohol, a tad too wry and harsh for its own good. The initial sweetness lingers and cloys a bit. Quite an intense, modern American imperial stout, boozy and sweet, but for me personally not Jackie O's best, in being a tad too alcoholic and, for a smoked stout, simply not smoked enough. In all still a deep, intense, generous beer though, that much is clear.

375 ml. bottle sampled thanks to Kraddel! Black, little mocha bubbles. Nose is sweet bourbon, bourbon is moderate, sugar, faint plastic, molasses are rather big and upfront. Taste is mellow marshmallow, bourbon, bourbon is soft, basic sugar, faint varnish finish, lacking smoke, surprisingly light bodied for a 11 % ABV Bourbon BA RIS, would have been better with a bigger bodied, slightly thin but overall pretty nice, vanilla, low bourbon,.... Smoke basically vanish, nice tasty. Not bad at all.

Bottle. Pours black, small grey head. Smell is bourbon, some heat by the alcohol, some roasty notes. Taste is rather sharp, full, oaty, very creamy ! Some burnt malts, some sweetness. Mild vanilla trough the oak notes. Rich in taste, and for sure intense enough. i get no smokyness myself, and although that’s a negative thing to their effort, it’s a great thing to my pallet, as I strongly disslike smoke. Mild boozyness. Good MF and carbo,
