Blackberry Daze IPA gets its hop bitterness and some hop aroma in the brewhouse, but most of the action happens in the cellar when the fruit is added during secondary fermentation. A special blend of loamy, herbaceous hops for dry-hopping complements the brightness and deep complexity of the blackberries. The result is a funky synthesis of rich earth and ripe fruit, hop bitterness and blackberry tartness, with alluring color and aromas up front, sublimely intense flavors, and a refreshingly dry finish.

Surprised by how much I like this beer--what with my general avoidance of fruit IPAs and all--but Anchor’s crafted a harmonious blend of subtle blackberry and classic West Coast IPA, keeping a hoppy, herbaceous back end without allowing the front to become sweet or overly fruity. Blackberry tartness strikes early but doesn’t linger, instead flowing into a solid pine-biscuit middle before grapefruit and orange pop up on the finish. Grows mildly resinous in the fade, but remains gentle enough you don’t forget the berries on the frontside. Gorgeous pour, red-gold with a lasting head and tons of lacing. Aroma’s a wash (kind of a pattern with Anchor IPAs), but the texture’s creamy and easygoing, and this pint disappeared unexpectedly fast. Nice.

Bottle from Total Wine, South Richmond. Pours deep golden, almost amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is similar to sweetened blackberry tea from a jug, with additional hints of citrus. Flavor is better blackberry, orange peel, pine, toasted malt. It’s OK.

From bottle as pictured. So, everything’s gotta be IPA today, huh? Even fruit beers, WTF! Way to ruin a style, Jaymho! Pours a unique lighter strawberry in color and its a but hazy. Perhaps a tiny bit of fruit in the typical IPA aroma. Taste is IPA fer sure, but its not as clear or fresh in effects with that barely perceivable BB in there. So everything gottah be IPA today huh? OH, I said that already, bleh. If you like IPA and hate BB, go for this cause its pretty much a decent IPA by itself.

Light haze on this gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and fairly dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Thin malts, mildly sweet. Some estery sweetness. Tangy blackberry with some orange peel bitterness underneath. Light lemony floralness. Light tangy finish. I’ve never been convinced by these dark berry IPAs, this one hasn’t changed my mind.

330ml bottle from Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours deep amber with a purple tinge. Aroma bears distant blackberry fruit, malts. Taste showcases more of a malt-lead character, with any blackberry influence being difficult to detect. Rather disappointing.. was very tempted to add some blackberry syrup myself to liven it up.
