Ye Olde Black 1 is packed with flavour and body. It has the hop forward profile of an IPA with the dark colour of a porter.
Strawberry and melon notes balance hints of coffee and chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness leading to a pleasantly dry finish.
This limited edition IPA is hand brewed for Ye Olde Fighting Cocks by Red Squirrel Brewing Co.

Pours a clear brown amber colour with a huge frothy beige head. The aroma is brown sugar, some roasted malt and citrus fruit. Smooth in the mouth, a sweet toasty malt flavour, biscuit, chocolate and slightly minerally with a little salt in the finish.

500ml bottle from the brewer. Very dark brown with an enormous foamy tan head - in fact more head than beer, literally had to spoon it out of the glass because it just would not stop erupting. Aroma: surprisingly fruity (strawberries?), citrus fruit, hint of roasted malts. Taste: mild roasted malt, berries, citrus fruit hops, chocolate, hint of smoke, pine, sweetish flavour with a mildly bitter finish. Smooth mouthfeel, quite heavy carbonation, medium body. Nice enough.

Tasting at Mr Smith’s Skyflat. Thanks to CDA hound Colin. Clear deep amber beer, good pale tan head. Palate is light, dry and has mild fine carbonation. Dry malts, mild dark character. Touch of sweet berries. Floral bitter hops kick in, some pine as well. Dry finish. A tad dry. Okay.

Bottle shared at Leighton’s place. 7/1/2015. Name controversy aside, many thanks to Mr Bois for the black ipa tick. Clear copper reddy coloured pour with a lasting thin off white head. Aroma is toast, mineral, meaty, salty. Flavour is composed of thin mineral, nutty grainy, toast, apple, earthy pine. Palate is thin, mineral, slightly chalky, highish carbonation. Ok.

Bottle thanks to T - Seedy A - Bois. It pours clear deep brown with a thick off-white head. The nose is bitter - sweet, icing sugar, raisin, brown sugars, candied peel and fruit cake. The taste is bitter, toasted action, earth, soapy citrus, clean, light charred notes, citrus peel and brown bread. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Clean and toast. Not sure I would clock this as a black ipa. Ok I suppose.

Bottle shared in. London - big thanks to Colin. Pours clear amber brown with a creamy tan head. The nose holds gooey pine, a bit of toffee, earth, brown bread. Medium sweet flavor with toasted bready malts, faint toffee, ripe orange, pine oils. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous on the finish, more oily pine, brown bread, earth. Easy drinking, low-octane CDA.
