330ml bottle from the Clove Hitch, Liverpool. Dark brown amber colour with a very thin white foam head and aroma of caramel, toffee, molasses, mellow orange, pine, earthy. Taste is sweet malty, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, orange, woody, pine, spice, boozy. Sticky mouthfeel, medium bodied, low carbonation, dry tangy lightly bitter warming finish. Quite drinkable.

330ml bottle. Pours reddish deep amber. No carbonation. Aroma is sweet, hoppy, syrupy. Taste continues along those sweet, syrupy lines with a sticky finish. I agree with Benzai it’s more like a fruity Barley Wine than a DIPA, and despite the carbonation problems I can’t deny it’s not bad.

Bottle. Beer Central, Sheffield. Sold at less than cost, due to reported quality control issues! Anyhow, it opens silently. Pours clear, dark amber. No head. Nose has thick, chewy malts. Barley sugar sweets. Caramelised peach and pineapple hop. Smells like a six month old US IPA that you’ve taken a punt on for the tick, knowing it’s way past its potential best. Taste is full on sweet, turning sticky, resinous bitter. Lip sticking, smooth mouthfeel. Drinks pretty easy. Modest carbonation, but more than I expected. Long, chewy, brûléed fruit, bitter finish. The brewer ought to have peddled this as a big, hoppy barley wine.

Bottle @ home. Hazy a bit murky even, dark red color, average sized off-white to beige head that diminishes quickly. Aroma is malts, caramel, loads of sweet sticky hops. Tastes about the same: malts, a lot of caramel, a lot of sweet sticky hops. Only a slightly bitter finish. Thick texture, full body, virtually no carbonation. Almost completely flat, and apparently others have had the same experience. Not a very good Imperial IPA but as a heavy barley wine it could do.

330ml bottle from cornelius. Pours murky dark brown with no head. Looks flat. Aromas of toffee and stewed prunes. Some dark sweet sherry notes. Taste is boozy, sweet. Sticky. Could’ve done with some fizz.

Mother Kellys. Keg. Clear red - amber beer, tidy pale tan head. A nose of cat’s piss morphing into tropical fruits! Palate is actually quite light and has decent fine carbonation. Suitably sweet malt base, mild caramel. Hops are a complex and somewhat heavy array of skunk, salt, resinous tropical fruits, mild berry fruits and a fair bit of hop spice. Mild aniseed and alcohol bite. Finishes smooth and warming and finally showing a little toffee and marmalade. Complex and entertaining but it’s a heavy beast. Kinda very hoppy barleywine.

Keg at Mother Kelly’s - London. Pours deep, clear ruby with a creamy tan head. Immense aroma, rife with piney hops, ripe berries, ripe orange, pale bread, mild caramel. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with heavy, oily pine, lightly toasted brown bread, brown sugar, ripe orange, mango, papaya, melon, minimal bitterness. Full bodied, chewy, with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish, hugely resinous, with more ripe citrus fruits, pine, tropical fruits, rich bready malts, some toasty sugars, toffee. It really is quite good, and I have no doubt that a lot of hops died in the making of this beer. If it was just a bit drier and cleaner, it would really be a stunner.
