In the summer of 2014, an intense purple field of lemon beebalm wildflowers grew around Jester King. Our Head Brewer Garret Crowell picked some of the leaves and flowers and dried them for several months. On brew day in late September of 2014, he picked fresh horehound around our brewery and added it to the dried lemon beebalm leaves and flowers. He then made a concentrated tea of horehound and lemon beebalm and added it at the end of the boil.

Vulgar Affectation was brewed with Hill Country well water, barley, wheat, rye, rolled oats, lemon beebalm, horehound, and hops. It was fermented with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the Texas Hill Country. It is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and 100% naturally conditioned in bottles, kegs, and casks. Vulgar Affectation is 5.0% alcohol by volume, 38 IBU, 3.6 pH at the time of packaging in April 2015, and has a finishing gravity of 1.002 (0.5 degrees Plato).

Bottle pour at Zwanze Day 2026, at The Sovereign in Washington DC. Poured a hazy yellow color with a huge, foamy white sized white head. Aroma was really nice wheat, with some pleasant funky yeast, typical of Jester King. Herbal, bitter orange, some light spice. Flavor was very light tartness, slightly soapy. Really subtle.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma has a light grain note with a light wheat and faint rye note. Very floral and with a moderately strong herbal note. Moderate lemon notes with a light acidity. A bit grassy. A light honey note. Pours a hazy, pale golden straw color with a medium large, moderately thick, white head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers for a bit before disappearing. No lacing or legs. Flavor is dry with light wheat and rye notes and a touch of barley. Some light white bread notes. Medium bitterness. Light acidity with moderate lemon notes. Grassy with an herbal note. Grassy herbal note lingers in the very dry finish in a ot great way. Some light honey notes as well. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with moderate carbonation. Low astringency, but present and low alcohol warmth. Overall, not a great beer, especially the finish. The herbal and grassy note just don’t do it for me and don’t work with the very dry finish.

Keg at Route CBC, CBC Clapham, 02/10/15. Hazed orange amber with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is light soap, grassy, touch of funk, bitter orange. Taste comprises lemon rind, straw, light herbals, more soap suds, bitter orange, farmy, spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a tarte citric wash. Overly soapy for my liking, I expect a bier with such a big deScription to deliver more !!!

Craft Clapham. Keg. Route 66 event with most of the London crew. Hazy orange - gold beer, no head. Palate is light and crispy. Mild soap, not a good start. Orange and lemon, some citric pith. Light finish brings more soap. Fail.

Tap at route CBC. It pours hazy pale gold with a small white head. The nose is fresh bread, grassy, lightly herbal, funky, toasted grain, mild paper notes and hay. The taste is crisp, funky, minerals, some tartness, light paper, earth, some acidity and spice. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Not a whole lot of depth to it. OK, but far from JK’s best.
