Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Black with a creamy off-white head. Easy-drinking and light tasting stout, but not thin. The vanilla dominates its character and lingers in its aftertaste.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol October 2016. Near black in colour with a moderately sized, beige, head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet vanilla oak, and toasty malts, Flavour was sweet with milk chocolate, more vanilla and a gentle finish. Fine.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Brown-black with a thick cappuccino head. Smells and tastes like vanilla ice cream floating in an Irish coffee. No fake flavours or excessive sweetness here; it’s just right. Slight hint of treacle and fruit behind, and a light roastiness in the finish. Very drinkable by flavoured beer standards, I could happily have a few of these. By ’eck lass, it’s a Theakston brew that I really really like. Who’d ha’ thought it were possible? !

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW - London. Pours deep brown with a slight, creamy tan head. Definitely some vanilla in the nose, like vanilla pods, with light ashy roast. Light to medium sweet flavour with notes of chocolate, subtle scorched earth, baking cocoa, oily vanilla. Medium bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes with more oily vanilla, gooey chocolate, roasted malts. Enjoyable stuff.

On cask up the White Lady. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn crema head. Nose - dominated by vanilla. A hint of chocolate, but more like smoke. Taste - smoke, charcoal and liquorice, but again really dominated by the vanilla. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - so the vanilla is too dominant and the underlying stout is too dry. I think the base beer here would work better if it was a sweet stout or at least note a dry stout which I think it is in reality. It doesn’t really work as a complete package though there are elements in isolation that are good.

Cask at the Queens’ Hotel (JDW), Aldershot. An opaque glossy black pour with a tan head; aroma of vanilla essence; dry in the mouth with some custardy vanilla and deeply roasted chocolate malts; then a alctic finish with some fruity coffee. Seemed rather artificial over all.

Cask up the white lady. Pours near black with a thick beige head. Aromas of sweet vanilla, fudge. Taste is vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. Far too sweet. Vanilla overpowered any stout character.

Cask handpull at Crosse Keys JDW London. Black beer lasting tan head. Strong vanilla on the aroma. A little thin after that almost medicinal. Oh dear this isn’t very good and i struggled with only a third. Woody medicinal. Not good. Worse than the Sheps Saison.
