This is what you get when you take a Russian Imperial Stout and mix it with an Imperial IPA, then force-feed it sugar until it can’t take any more. Then you put it into 2 different oak barrels that previously contained Bourbon. This is not beer or wine. It’s not spirit either. It’s inspired from America, born in Belgium and headed to outer space. It’s Mohawk Double Rocket , a Belgo-American Barrel Aged Barley Wine Style Ale.

Sample @ Kristiansand ølfestival. Unclear reddish brown body with a lacing, small off-white head. Strong and good aroma of sweet malt, caramel, dry fruit, hint of chocolate and surprisingly low alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, dry fruit, oranges, some oak and bitterness. Full bodied and long lasting aftertaste with warming alcohol. It’s kinda sweet and boozy but not in a bad way.

Flaske 375ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen. Ekstremt dyp amber. Bra skum med litt farge. Varer en stund. Heftig aroma av sherry. Innslag av plommer & fiken. Smaken en kaskade av ulik frukt. Både sur og søt i en herlig blanding. En lurer på hvor alkoholen er blitt av men den kommer snikende med en behagelig tørrhet - og røde kinn. Kanskje i søtligste laget men denne kunne jeg tenke meg både til og som dessert.

375 ml bottle, vintage 2012, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 17.2%. Cloudy dark brown colour, moderate to low off-white to beige head. Intense sweetish and alcoholic aroma of molasses, bourbon, vanilla and oak, Very oaky flavour, again bourbon and vanilla, with loads of molasses, sugar and alcohol, also roasty and hoppy notes. Impressive in a way, but not harmonious. Not sure that I would buy this one again. *P.S.: As I finished the bottle, I have to admit that I somehow found the alcoholic warmth quite pleasing, as I slowly got used to it. There are also some notes of dark dried fruits that are quite nice.

Bottle, at Kristiansand Ølfestival. It pours a dark unclear brown body under a dense, finger-thick head. The alcohol is sure present, which isn’t surprising at 17.2%, but there’s also lots of room for toffee and chocolate. Some coffee and prunes chiming in. Warming, full-bodied and soft on the palate, with malty sweetness, toffee, coffee and some dark chocolate. Prune hints towards the warming, sweet finish. Too sweet and warming this one, but sure decent. 140823

Pours hazy brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, oak, vanilla, chocolate, dried fruits and alcohol. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light to medium bitter with a long oak, vanilla, caramel and dried fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bamberg jolly day 2 25/01/2014. Tasting at Cafe Abseits. Thanks to AndySniow. Viscous sryupy orange red amber coloured pour. Flavour is hot burning alcohol, slightly harsh. Some berry. Aroma is hot alcohol, jammy, biscuity malts and fruits. Palate is viscous, sryup, sticky full. Big beer, a bit heavy handed.

Bamberg Bash Day 2. Cafe Abseits tasting. Somewhat plastered now! A 17.2% barleywine is just the ticket! Hazy deep amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Crispy palate. Spicy sweet malt, bourbon - vanilla and caramel. Light dry finish. Drinkable!

Day 2 of the post Xmas Bamberg Jolly, Cafe Abseits Tasting bottle thanks to Andy Snow (I think?), 25/01/14. Dark mahogony brown with a moderate beige head that dissipates to spotting. Nose is booze forward, earthy, dark fruit, cocoa, slightly musty, dark toffee. Taste comprises toffee fudge, mineral notes, dark fruit, booze well evident and a little on the harsh side but not massively so ABV considered. Full full bodied affair, fine carbonation, warming booze in the finale. Decent enough for 17.2% but not something I’d rush back to !
