Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

100 ml. from bomber @ Gollem: USA Beerweek(end) #2. Black, tanned head, lighter head tan than expected, non-lasting. Nose is licorice, umami, molasses, soy sauce. Taste is very heavy on licorice, almost BE qualities in that aspect, umami, herbal, gravy, more licorice, red grape, sweet, BE cloying herbal roots, umami, bark,... Body is black licorice candy, herbal, bitter. Far too much black licorice for me, not what I expected. Overly big umami black licorice with BE aspects. Def. expected more.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/10/2015. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of coffee, raisin, fig, date, licorice, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of coffee, raisin, fig, date, licorice, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, toasted dark bread, nuttiness, dark fruit, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, lightly slick/silky, and slightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol. Overall this is an outstanding Russian imperial stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV. This is not nearly as roasty or dense as others in the style; but still has awesome malt complexity, in combination with fruity yeast and earthy hop flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. A- Licorice, alcohol, roasty, cocoa. A- Black color, black liquid, tan head. T- Subtle alcohol, licorice, roasty, dry cocoa. P- Full body, sharp texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- A bit of an alcohol burn for only 8% and not too complex but a solid seemingly traditional impy stout. Good beer.

Tap. Thick, fine, tan head on black. Dull and cloudy. Fruity nose, berries, chocolate, marmalade, cola. Rich flavor, fruit and umami, miso, citrus. Noble hops, chocolate, vanilla. Weird stuff, a bit like stanky natto.
