JW Dundee’s American Amber Lager has a complex malt character that is masterfully balanced by a distinct American Hop aroma and flavor. We use 5 different malts to create the complex malt flavor in this beer. We start with our 2 Row Pale Malt as our base and then add 4 different types of Crystal Malts. It is the combination of the four Crystal malts that define the complexity of the beer. Although the malt is showcased in this beer, the hops play an important part in the balance of flavors. We use Simcoe, Cascade, and Magnum hops to create the hop profile that balances the complex malt character. This balance creates a beer that has great depth of flavor while still being very drinkable. JW Dundee’s Amber Lager is flavorful enough to satisfy craft beer drinkers yet is still accessible to those looking to find a beer with a little more character than their normal beer.

From Oct 2007

This pours from 12oz bottle a clear amber-red with a 2 finger head of foam that shrinks to a fine but solid layer at the end of the session.

The smell has some caramel malt and a light fruit nose to it.

The taste has notes of caramel malt, some roasted malt, a faint hint of hops, and not much else. It finishes slightly bitter but more so on the watery side. I was hoping for better because I'm a pretty big fan of the Pale Ale but I've found HFs other offerings are pretty mediocre. Maybe the IPA will be to my liking....

Bottle, from US. Backlog entry. Entering my historic scores for US beers whilst visiting New York. No tasting notes kept, just rating.

Dark, slightly hazy amber with a small, off-white head. Caramel/cola scent. Taste is caramel malt, candied fruit... A little flat and stale, since it’s now retired......unknown bottling date. Probably ok in it’s prime..or better. Sweet malt, "brown" tasting. Rating indicates a little " benefit of the doubt"

Sept 2006: This was bought in the UK, part of a JW Dundee’s Craft Beers of America Pack. It poured beautifully into a Berliner Kindl 0.4 Litre straight glass, large creamy head on a clear amber body of liquid. No great smell, its smell and taste reminded me of a Dusseldorf Alt, which as a lager: shouldn’t but that was my thoughts. Delicate mouthfeel and drinkable, not what I was expecting, but overall, I liked it.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Brown lager! Malty with a very subtle fruit note. Sweeter malt finish.

Overall Impression: Another one of the beers from Dundee that was pretty boring, nothing memorable here, just a semi-decent beer.

Bottle. Pours a copper with a finger or so of dense head and aromas of caramel and apple juice. Flavor is a watery mix of caramel and apple juice concentrate. Life is too short to drink beer like this.

Light to medium amber color, tall head, quite bubbly. Slightly sweet caramel aroma with decent American hops. Dark malt flavor, caramel and brown sugar. A bit sweet and one-dimensional, but decent hop balance. Not really so interesting, but not bad either.

Bottle from Sondra. Amber color with a frothy beige head. Malty aroma. A bit watery with moderate carbonation. Flavor is malty, and there’s some bitter. It’s really rather drinkable, considering it’s bottom fermented. AB take note. A lager can have flavor, even if it’s made in America.
