Bottle from Frui Vita. Medium thick, slight ’papery’ lacing, fairly stable, pale greyish beige head over a translucently mahogany brown beer with vermillion hue, clear. Sweet yet fragrant aroma of hazelnut paste, cashew nuts, lots of caramel, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, candied dates, some sweet sherry but in the simplest kind of way, banana, milk chocolate bars, cooked red cabbage but not in the DMS way, apple cake, toasted brown bread, cinnamon powder, old gingerbread, cloves and a lot of iron. Sweetish onset, hints of pear, blueberry and the inevitable ’Belgian’ banana, medium carbo, sweet, very emphatically caramelly and honeyish malts quickly shifting to a bittersweet nuttiness but all things considered and even regarding its 5% ABV, rather thin; some of the initial fruit esters continue but restrainedly so, metallic ’zing’ in the middle as with many Leroy beers, leading to a simple, toastedly and nutty bittersweet malt finish adding a dash of herbal hops (retronasal old tea bags and dried flowers but subtly so) and that is about it. Classic Belgian ’dubbel’ with no other ambitions than to be friendly to the intended audience - arguably better than its blonde sister (Vaertlander) but still on the bland and boring side. Technically okay though, if one ignores the metallic quality and old school simplicity. This specific type of brown beers may have worked well forty years ago, but it has no relevance anymore in this day and age - though I still respect Leroy’s stubbornly old fashioned approach, even though it only serves to keep some ’living fossils’ of 20th-century Belgian beer culture (you know, before ’craft beer’ began) alive. In all: simple and thin, but decent, almost reminiscent of an English brown ale.
