STEENBRUGGE Wit-Blanche abbey beer is a wheat beer brewed with 40% unmalted wheat and 60% malt. It has a refreshing flavour and a fruity, lightly smoked yeast aroma combined with the subtle Bruges “gruut” blend of herbs and spices, with an emphasis on coriander and Curaçao.

250ml bottle from Carrefour Brugge - A clody yellow body with a thin white head. Nose clove and banana, but very faint. A little watery in the palate, making the taste a bit washed out, and leaving it a very disappointing and boring brew.

Bottle, 330 ml. Hazy color, citrus aroma, spicy, medium body. Decent witbier.

750ml corked and caged bottle. Hazy orange-yellow body. Thin, fading white head. Mild sweet brewhouse aroma, some oats, wheat. Medium bodied, very easy and restrained. Has some pleasant, mellow depth to it. The spices are there, giving it a zest bite up front, and lingering a little into the aftertaste. They are much subtler and refined than most new school examples of the style, and are well incorporated. Rather mundane, and probably not that fresh. OK.

Bottle. Pale golden colour with a white head with medium short to medium duration. Aroma is mainly citrus with notes of yeast and light malts. Flavor is quite similar as aroma dominated by yeasts and citrus notes. Light final with a mild bitterness.

On tap at La Trappiste, Canterbury. Could have got this in Belgium for less than 2 euro for a bottle but ended up spending £2.60 for a half. At least it’s in a Steenbrugge glass. Pale gold cloudy lasting white head. Banana aroma, lasts through the flavour too, but the flavour expands out to a lemon curd flavour too. I’ve always enjoyed Belgian wits and this one is pretty good, loses some points for being a touch metallic. Love the banana and light bugglegum aroma and flavours with a touch of hop on the finish. Decent.

Flasske delt med Kitty i Brugge: uklar og med kort skum. Ufrisk aroma og smak - overmodne bananer kombinert med slappe citrusfrukter. En skuffelse.

Draught @ O’Connell’s, Tampere. Rated on 11.12.2009
Aroma has wheaty notes, some soapy citrus and hints of hay. Flavour feels thin with wheat, citrus notes, some coriander and hints of peaches. Too watery and thin.

Bottle. Hazy orange with a white head that soon fades. Wheaty aroma with lemon, vanilla and herbs. Very subdued spices, a bit of clove. Sweet with a modest citrus tang, gentle bitterness, some herbal notes.. There _are_ some subtle things going on here, but without that punchy refreshing quality there’s not a lot of point.
