Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt, and lesser notes of chocolate, as well as a light touch of alcohol. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of chocolate. I find the body a bit thin.

Blind tasting at sk8vikings porter / stout tasting, beer no 28. Thanks to my friend Carsten for shipping these from Boston, cheers mate. Pours dark brown with a lacing rim from the head. Aroma is malty, smoked. Quite smoked flavour, not full bodied as such. Dry flavour.

Pours a watery black with a thin, almost non-existent white head. Smells heavy of smoke and peat with a faint hint of roasted malt in the back. Aroma is certainly unique, but also one dimensional and a little overpowering. Initial flavor is smokey and a touch woody. Finish is all smoke, a little chalky and very overpowering on the palate. If you like smoke/rauch beers, then give it a shot. I was hoping the smoke would be more subtle and leave a more complex, drinkable product but was left wanting more, or maybe a little less.

Pleasant smoke and malt aroma without so much smoke as to scare away someone unfamiliar with the style. Black beer. Flavor has smoke and more medium sweet malt, but some bitter chocolate and a dry finish. Nice, smooth palate. It would be better with more smoke, but still has more smoke than many other beers calling themselves a smoked porter.

Oh man I was scared to try this beer, I normally steer clear of these Harpoon series brews but I could not pass on a smoked beer. But worst of all I was afraid i may actually agree with JoeMcPhee on a rating. Luckily though I really enjoy this beer. 12oz bottle, Encore edition (over 10 bucks a sixer, I went for a single and wont buy again for this price though). Pours black with brown edges and a hairline thin halo lacing. Aroma is amply smoked (heavenly) with light chocolate and roast. A great meld of the smoke and porter. Taste is a bit watery roast with a long smoke aftertaste. A light body but gets some heft from the smoke. A bit of a mineral feel on the aftertaste. A thirst quencher and returnable if it wasn’t for the price (smoking malt is not expensive!).

Pours deep mahogany into an English pint. Fluffy mocha pancake batter head slowly recedes. Smoked malts and sweet pit fruit aromas. Creamy and thin with slightly sweet caramel-covered slim jim with a lasting metallic smoked finish.

Dark-beige head, fast gone over opaque brown beer. Smoked, distinct but discreet beechwood fumes, a bit meaty, but nowhere like a Bamberg one. Where they do resemble is in the instant appetizing, hungering effect the noses have on me - I would start eating, never to stop. Bit peppery aroma, and black cardemom. Smoked wood & ham, going over in cigarette ash flavours, but ending in a very bitter, quinine-like note, on both tonguesides. Smoked notes go discreet, but very woody. Full bodied, even when thinning out in the finish. Long burning MF, bitter aftertaste. In esssence excellent, aromatic porter, but having one near-fatal flaw: too aggressively hopped for the smoked style. Big thanks to DannP and Lutje.

Very dark brown. Aroma shows some toasty notes, a little coffee and a hint of smoke. Mild coffee notes in the palate and a moderate body. One of the more restrained examples.

On draught Anam Cara Feb 2005. Dark, clear auburn-brown, small tan head that quickly fizzles to a thin covering. Aroma smells of salty wood smoked fish, touches of sweet English toffee and a clean, yeasty finish. Flavor is immediately full of smoked malt. It’s a wonderful smoke flavor, not overdone, or artificial tasting. The smoke slowly recedes from the palate, transitioning in to a soft, clean caramel and toffee sweetness. And that’s all. Show’s over. Medium body. Not much beer characteristic, kind of a smoked beverage. Great smoke flavor, but they need to work on the rest of the aspects of the beer.
