Bouteille 341ml.

Originally rated May 2006. Great idea, to create this beer and put the map of only the good beer stores of Quebec. I bought mine at the Dépanneur À-Tout-Prix in Laval, so it had the map how to get to that store on the label. I think this is my first old ale, after 600 reviews... about time ! Pours a hazy caramel-copper colour with a touch of orange and a nice creamy tanned head. Great retention and decent lace. The nose is very hoppy at first, but then caramel and nuts are revealed. Slight tarty mouthfeel, but quite refreshing. The taste is a good mix of toffee, hop, burnt wood and some nuts. Reminds me of a good IPA, with a bit more alcohol. Maybe a bit much hop for an old ale, but a great brew none the less.

(Bottle 34,1 cl) Courtesy of Siroy. Hazy, amber golden with a tall, dense, off-white head leaving some lacework. Tart, malty nose. Medium body, some fruit and a bitter finish. Not exactly thrilling. 310507

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a huge orange head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of over ripe fruits and light notes of metal. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of over ripe fruit and berries, leading to a dry end.

2005 bottle from Rastacouere, drunk on 10/6/06
Medium amount of chalk-tinged beige/tan head slowly recedes to cover and eventually a ring, leaving minimal lace. Clear and filtered, unfortunately, with a mahogany and beige colored body showing soy-auburn highlights in the light and some lighter brass notes near the surface.
Light breadiness in the nose signals a touch of carbonation mingling with crytal malts. Very clean yeast presence, as usual for this brewer with just a splash of light peppery phenols on the finish. Mainly a light choco-caramel sweetness, with hardened pumpernickel notes balancing. Hops have mostly faded, though some citrus and pine notes still survive, adding a fruitiness that is welcome, though perhaps too reserved. What you would expect from an old ale, some raisins, prunes, figs, plums, dates, etc... is not completely lacking here, but just too drowned out by the hard crystal malt and slight cardboard/breadiness. The aroma is only medium in strength, and no alcohol is noted.
Flavor is again highly clean, beginning with breadiness, some very minimal vinous/oiliness suggesting prunes and sweet raisins and then a large drying effect is felt. Mostly hard crystal malt, dried bread and a touch of almond/vanilla, it seems to take control and stretches the beer very thin by the finish. The malt potential noticed right away runs out of steam. Perhaps due to the filtered nature and forced carbonation. Whatever the case, it ends as a well-made if rather simple and forgettable beer. Carbonation is moderate, somewhat overdone initially, but settling well enough. Alcohol is not perceived, though there is a tinge of sharpness on the very end, probably more a tannic quality from the hops and/or malt.

Bottle: poured a brown/reddish color ale with a huge foamy head with perfect retention. Aroma of sweet slightly roasted malt with some hops that are very hard to recognize. Taste is slightly sweet with a good malt presence and ends with astringent hops that don’t really fit in there IMHO. Body is less full then expected and carbonation is quite high. I find this generally lack character and the presence of astringent hops didn’t so it for me. Probably one of the less enjoyable offering from this brewer.

Dark red-foxy; very little carbonation, and coloured head fast gone. Sharpish vegetable smell, as (sweetwater) algae; coloured malts and lots of it. Toasted, crumbly hard bread or crisps in the end. Just a whiff of hops, and charcoal. Very outspoken taste of coloured and roasted malts, stout-ish without being it - roasted barley. In a second helping, an explosion of resiny hops, I find little or no citrus here. There is a touch of saltiness hidden, however. Sligthly oily texture, very remarkable. No carbonation, but doesn’t feel dead. Bit strange for an old ale. To me, more a cross between an APA and a dry stout. Which is perfect with me. Grand merci à Olivier!

Brown ale with mahogany hues and a thin off-white head, lacing. Light caramel in aroma with light floral hops, peppery. Nice caramel malt in mouth, with nutty notes, floral hops comming well. A nice mix between a nut brown and an old ale. Bottle from Rahman, Dec. 2005. 2.49$

Dark amber colour, slight haze. The aroma is mainly caramelly with a yeast backdrop and orangey hop notes. The flavour is woody and whole wheat bready with a big astringent bitterness, faint citrusy notes like kaffir limes. Honestly, a bit too astringent for my liking.
