Brown 0.5 litre bottle, 6.9% ABV. best before 31 Mar 09, drank 17 Feb 09. A gift from Fred Waltman: I forget what he got in exchange. Poured into a La Chouffe tulip glass. Mahogany reddy/brown and clear for a rauchbier, sadly what little head arrived soon left. A small collar of light tan was all that remained. A slight burnt aroma, a bit like a smoked ham or bar-b-que briquette but not as pronounced. The taste was malty sweet with a hint of smoking jacket and cigars. As the beer warms the smokiness becomes more prevalent and begins to take over completely. Far from a rich, deep or creamy body, it does however have a presence. The alcohol is just about evident and it warms the mouth as the flavours begin to die away.

Bottled 500ml (ABV 6.7%, BB 05/2011)
Thanks Bierkoning! Deep nut brown color, good cloudy beige head. Aroma has smoke, barley grains, paper and caramel, maybe a bit berryish too. Front is sweetish caramel malty. Then lingering smokeyness, some alcohol and light hoppyness. Smoother and less smokey than Schlenkerlas, but pleasant and stylish rauchbock.

On tap at the brewery. Dark amber. Thin head. The aroma is bready, toasty with a hint of chocolate. Lightly smokey palate with light breadcrusty malt notes. The finish is a mellow, rounded smokiness. Good beer, probably needs more sugars, more smoke or both.

On tap at In de Wildeman. Dark reddish brown colour, thick creamy beige head. Aroma of ryebread, caramel, a hint of smoke, some molasses. Flavour is rather sweet, rye, caramel, molasses, very malty, and a soft subtle smoke flavour. Light bitter finish. Medium bodied, syrupy texture. Smooth and easy drinking. Nice one!
