#Wanderlust - an interesting taste experiment. My palette doesn’t know if it’s a filter coffee or a pale ale

Draught @ Van Moll Brewpub. Clear golden color, medium sized white to off-white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, heavy coffee and espresso with coffee and espresso bitter. One dimensional. Nicely done but I guess this is only done because they can do it. Not something I'd drink much of. Well executed but it's a "drink once and that's it" beer imo.

One of BBP's recent experiments, an APA-style beer aromatized with coffee. Lacing, snow white, moussy head, hazy orangey blonde robe. Aroma indeed reveals coffee, as in dry coffee powder, piercing through the basic beer's character of orange zest, pistachio nuts, dried mango, biscuit, sweet stewed onions. Spritzy onset, a tad overcarbonated perhaps, but pleasantly fruity and clean, with hints of raw pineapple, dried mango and green banana, restrainedly sweetish with a soft sourish edge; slick body with noticeable 'oat velvetiness', a bit creamy, lightly nutty and bit biscuity malt background. The coffee opens up in the end, with a retronasal whiff of coffee powder embedded in aromatically hoppy aspects of citrus peel and zest; bitterness is soft but effective. Interesting and very pleasant, not over the top in its coffee addition but still very recognizable as a coffee beer; not the first Anglo-Saxon, 'newly' hopped pale ale with coffee I had (I remember a Mikkeller beer with a very similar profile), but very certainly the first in Belgium, adding something specific and enjoyable to the wide array of Belgian beer flavours. I love this - and I have the impression BBP is silently getting better with each brew they launch, but that is probably subjective.
