In the world of German brewing, Kräusen refers to the intense proliferation of bubbles and foam formed during fermentation of a young or "green" beer. And Aufkräusen (literally to kräusen it up), refers to a historic brewing technique in which some green beer is added to a fully-matured lager. This is a very old and very typically German tradition, and today even English-speaking brewers refer to this technique as krausening. Krausening brings the vibrant freshness of young beer to the more refined, austere flavors of a fully-matured lager.
Aecht Schlenkerla Kräusen starts out as normal Helles Schlenkerla Lager and matures for months in the old rock cellars underneath the brewery. Just before filling it is blended using the before mentioned "Kräusen" technique with classic Märzen Rauchbier. The result is an unfiltered, bottom fermented and amber color Märzen Lager hybrid with a vibrant and slightly smoky flavor.

Barwa ciemnozłota, niemal klarowne, piana biała, średnio obfita, średnio trwała. W aromacie woda po parówkach, szynka. W smaku półwytrawne, sporo szynki, ale z gatunku tych tańszych. Do tego lekka słodycz. Goryczka niska, wysycenie średnie, ciało wodniste. Nic specjalnego.

Bottle from Yeme. Great aroma as we are used to with Schlenterla. Not as rich on tongue but truly pleasant. Easy drinking. Good

Bottle. Amber with an inch of white head. 3+ Aroma of smoke - lighter than most of their beers - breadcrust, some floral and spicy notes. Not all that sweet with little depth to the malt which makes the smoky finish a little biting as well as bitter. At least in bottle not their best.

A beautiful golden copper ale with a thin lacing off white head. In aroma, nice smokey caramel malt with light mineral notes, light and smooth. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with smooth bacon notes, nice and clean. On tap at l'autre oeil.

Flaska från SB. Något mörkare bärnstensfärgad med hög och fluffig smutsvit krona. Maltig, något sötare, subtil rökighet. Snällare variant av deras märzen. Gott.

500 ml bottle from Schlenkerla Webshop, bb 12/2020. Amber, clear body, with a big, fluffy, lacing, light beige head. Aroma bread, grains, bacon, wood, grass, some hay, some hops, caramel. Tastes similar, with some biscuit, dark honey. Medium, a bit creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation. Finishes smooth, moderate bitter, a bit dry, moderate smokey, wooden, hoppy, floral, bready, moderate sweet. Tasty! So smooth to drink, with a perfect balance of smooth malts, not too strong smoke and some hops from the background. Very quaffable because of the somehow creamy character and mouthfeel. Another lovely Schlenkerla! Score: 8 / 4 / 8 / 5 / 16
