The latest release in our Abstrakt series. Aged for over 14 months in barrels, AB:13 is an 11.3% Cherry Imperial Stout aged in ex Sherry whisky barrels.
Cherry & Sherry, the recipe was devised by our production manager Nikola and is based on the classic German Schwarzlwald dessert. This is very, very special. Pretty much all of our team have been blown away by this oak aged beer as it rattled off our bottling line.

11/X/13 - 37.5cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: 5/III/13 - bottle # 10043 (2013-951)
Clear dark brown to black beer, irregular beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of dried fruits, vanilla, caramel, some chocolate, toasted and roasted malts, maltose sugar. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of sour berries, some caramel, cherry jam, bit sugary, sourish touch. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, vanilla and caramel, bit sourish, and is it bourbon? (No, it's not apparently, but I'm just copying from my tasting notes, which were written before I'd read anything about the beer.) Some alcohol, sweet, little bitter, red forest fruits, blackberry candy. (So, apparently it's a cherry stout. Well, I sure did get the cherries!)

Tap @ Brewdog, Stockholm. Black, brown/red head. Intense canned fruity, light soury berry aroma, wood. Much going on here. Flavor has caramel, wood, red berries, sweetness. Complex. Long finish with some cherries on top. Just works.

Bottle #9721 of 9972:
Pitch black with a small but thick head. Aroma is roasted malt, soy sauce and alcohol. Flavour is roasted malt, salty licorice, soy sauce and alcohol. Another disappointing Abstrakt-beer.

Sample from bottle at BrewDog tasting, Stavanger. Pitch black colour, low tan head. Very nice aroma, besides the expected roasty notes I get cigar tobacco, sherry and cherries. Roasty flavour, moderate notes of sherry, whisky, oak and cherries. Very enjoyable.

Synthetic cork
Pitch black, with dark brown creamy head.
Deep aroma of roasted malts, lightly fruity and vinous; unfortunately there is also a whiff of cardboard; but the late dark bread, wood oven and pumpernickel kick is wonderful.
Full bodied, with round mouthfeel; good flavor of roasted malts and dark chocolate; it avoids the ashes trap, but there are unwanted traces of liquorice; it also has a delicate fruity (cherry) and vinous character, hence also a very light sourness; the alcohol provides pleasant warmth; strong bitterness, balanced for this powerful beer; moderate residual sweetness, just right; the sherry cask provides elegance.
Excellent beer, interesting and original; if they targeted a Schwarzwäld cake, they achieved it.

Tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013 - Session III. Pours deep black, oily, with a dark brown cream head. Rich chocolate cake aroma, myriad dark sugars. Medium to big sweet flavor with dark chocolate, raspberries (rather than cherries), more chocolate cake, light tang to the berries. Full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Warm finish with baking cocoa, earth, char, chocolate-covered cherries, roasted malts, burnt wood. Great balance, massive depth. One of the best beers of CBC 2013.
