220 mL bottle, at a cafe in Curral de Freiras in Madiera. Pours black, with a big, foamy, tan head. The nose is thin cocoa powder, weak coffee, cola, pumpernickel, and chalk. Dry and musty, with a mild, earthy bitterness. Light, crisp, and dusty. Pretty fair.

Tiny 0.2 l bottle at the apartment. Nose is weak roasty. In taste it’s somewhat better, there are some roasted and coffee notes in there wrapped up in a surprisingly silky mouthfeel. Light bodied with average carbo. Not half bad.

Bottle from a supermarket in Ericeira. Sweet dark malt aroma with caramel, some roasty notes. Hint of liquorice. Medium sweet, mildly bitter. Body on the light side. Not a Stout, more Dark Lager territory.

On keg at a wee coffee place near the apartment we stayed in, in Alfama. We were only after some Pateis Do Nato (custard tarts) but when in Lisbon. Appearance - deep brown to black, some brown edges. Creamy beige head. Nose - sweet malty cereal. Bourbon biscuits and general malt biscuits. Taste - more of the same. Palate - light to medium bodied, lightly roasty at the end. Overall - correctly classified by the original ratebeerian who loaded it, as a Schwarzbier. You could just tell. Good.
