Small ran head stayed on a still black body. Malt, liquorice & roasted aroma. Medium bodied, smooth on the tongue thinning out to a sharp back. Liquorice, malt, bitter & roasted tastes with a pithy citrus peel finish. Good one.

Pours a deep dark brown colour with a reddish tint and a small beige head. The aroma is roasted malts and chocolate with some charred grain notes. A dry in the mouth roasted taste, roasted malts, bitter chocolate and a dry burnt grain bitterness in the finish.

Cask at Smithfield, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. Malts and chocolate can be found in the aroma – provided you search for them ! A little watery in the mouth, but otherwise sweet and fruity with chocolate, dark fruits and plums, all on a malty base. There’s also some smokiness and a few hops hanging around. Finish is fairly dry. A decent enough stout without setting the world alight.
