Earl Of Essex. Opaque black - brown beer, small tan head. Palate is softish and semi dry. Modest fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts. Unsweet raspberry jam. Trace of barrel induced vanilla. Mildly tangy fruits, well buried. Light dry finish. A mellow fruity stout, decent and drinkable.

Keg at Beavertap, 29/11/14. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is light smoke, red berries, spice, toffee, chocolate, raspberry smacks. Taste comprises charr, very subtle chilli, roasted tones, spice, chocolate, big red berry and raspberry licks. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light roast and prominent red berry. Solid stout, plenty of depth for the ABV.

Keg at the Beavertown taproom. Pours deep brown with a foamy tan head. Engaging raspberry on the nose with undertones of roast and cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with more juicy raspberry, very slight tartness, restrained chocolate, touches of smoke. Medium bodied with average, lightly spritzy carbonation. Well balanced on the finish with a bit of burnt earth bitterness, bittersweet cocoa, more raspberry character. Very well integrated. Great stuff.

Keg at Beavertown. It pours near black with a decent light tan head. The nose is rich, roasted malt, smoke, rich, earth, juicy raspberry, light jam, raspberry ripple ice cream. The taste is rich, roasty, earth, smoke, medicinal whisky action, charred wood, warming alcohol, raspberry and light jam with a dry, medicinal finish. Interesting, balanced and quaffable. Nice work.

Tap. Friends of Ham, Leeds. Clear, dark red. Raspberry Ruffle chocolate bar. Roast malt. Some woody smoke. Tart, red fruit. Taste is light dry. Quite tart. Roast bitterness. Palate is smooth. More of the tartness. Doesn’t feel 6%. Finishes dry, and unripe fruit tart. Far removed from the base beer. Still very decent, mind.
