Cask special for Wetherspoons Spring 2014 International Real Ale Festival.

Shaun and Keith Standeaven have travelled to Caledonian Brewery, in Edinburgh, to brew this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. It is light copper in colour, with a fruity nose and light apricot and grapefruit aromas, leading to a pronounced bitterness in the flavour and a finish which is well balanced by fruit and malt notes.

Hops used: Cascade, Southern Promise

Cask at the William Webb Ellis, Twickers, 01/04/14, JDW Spring 2014 Fest Beer #14. Rich golden in colouration with moderate off white spotting that dissipates to nothing. Nose is biscuit malt, light hop presence, citric rind, honey. Taste comprises biscuit malt, bitter orange, light hops, hint of red grapefruit. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. So so, easy drinking affair but the blandometer is rising into amber,

Cask @ Secklow Hundred, Milton Keynes. Light copper, decent head. Woody biscuity aroma, slight citrus, some astringency. Taste is pleasant, sweet/sour with a heavy malty umami. Reasonable mouthfeel. This isn’t a bad beer at all!

Cask at Wetherspoons, Reading. Light copper with a moderate white head. Nice light frothy mouthfeel, but this froth has apparently been achieved through the use of copious amounts of soap. Butter and marzipan and an odd mix of dirt and detergent in the finish. Too sweet. Off flavours all over the place. Something very wrong here.

Crosse Keys Spoons. Cask. Almost clear amber beer, small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light and dry with mild fine carbonation. Light smooth pale malt, touch sweet. Little floralness and light bitter marmalade and tangy fruits. Light dry finish. It’s fine but a bolder showcase for the Southern Promise hops would have been better.
