Brewed with BrewDog Newcastle as part of CollabFest 2013.

Raucous Rubus was brewed by BrewDog Newcastle & The Durham Brewery.

Our Newcastle team were originally fancying a raspberry porter, but ended up opting for a raspberry saison because it’s ‘a bit more exotic’ and that’s what you need to keep you warm on the Toon quayside. Having just returned from a trip to Belgium, brewer Steve Gibbs was keen to put what he’d learned into action and took this as an opportunity to experiment. This being the first time Steve had used saison yeast, he decided to use a 50/50 mix of saison and ale yeast to get the proper saison flavours but also allow allow him a degree of certainty when fermenting.

Bottle as ’Durham Raspberry Saison’. Light haze on this deep red beer, good cream - tan coloured head. Palate is airy and dry with fine carbonation. Light dry malt with dry cream. Mild raspberry, mildly tangy. Touch of something bitter, perhaps yeast. Light dry finish. Not bad, a bit dry and the raspberry could pack more of a punch but it’s quite drinkable.

Bottle as ’Raspberry Saision’ limited to 1,500 bottles . This came courtesy of Peter Fowler, Shoulder of Mutton (cheers Peter), consumed at Lynn & Barrys, Wednesday 19th March 2014 A little raspberry fondant chocolate on the nose, tailing off to a light sweet raspberry juice at end. Colour is a very dark reddy/brown with light beige head. A little sweet and sourness in the mouth, the raspberry is evident throughout. A really good beer I thoroughly enjoyed this. Draft at BrewDog Camden on 19 October. Poured a hazy, very dark ruby with a thin, rocky white head. Aroma of raspberry syrup, molasses and straw. Raspberry very forward on the flavour followed by candy sugar and some citrus hop. Finish is brown sugar, coffee and more raspberry.

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch, London during the big collaboration release day event. Pours clear brown with no head. Plenty of dark fruit character, some earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. OK.

Keg at Brewdog, Edinburgh. Pours flat dark brown, no head. Light chocolate and raspberry aromas, plus spices. Thin taste, light bitterness and light sweetness. Then that weird spice note again that I can’t place. Being flat didn’t help this.

Keg at Brewdog shoreditch. Ruby red pour with not much of a head. Aroma is fresh raspberry slight tart. Flavour is berry raspberry tartness. Tart in the finish, but sweet initially. Some season yeast characteristics in the background, but mostly raspberry.

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch. It pours deep brown with a minimal white head. The nose is sweet tangy raspberry, jammy, light toast and cherry drops. The taste is fresh raspberry, tangy, toast, green apple, light spice, candy and hay with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. No great depth. But pretty tasty.
