With a history spanning more than 30 years, Franklin’s Brewery has a reputation for quality ales, and as the new owners, we are proud to continue this tradition of excellence. Having moved the brewery down from Harrogate, we suffered a significant setback when half of the brewing equipment was stolen while we were sorting out where and how to get set up.

Mermaid May Day Weekend Beer Festival 2016, St Albans. Black coloured ale. Has an initial light but gritty roasted malt taste, but a more stated and toasted lingering aftertaste. It’s nose is well stated with roasted malts throughout its life.

Cask half-pint at The Crown Inn, Oakengates Shropshire on 2nd Jan 2016. Coffee and chocolate esters rise from this dark brew with it’s well tanned head: those esters turn into mouth watering flavours to give a rich and smooth tasting Stout. Very drinkable indeed.

Cask @ The Crown, Oakengates. Pours very dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is espresso roast. Taste is much the same with a bitter espresso bite and hints of chocolate. Ok.

Cask at Westow House. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The nose is soft, sweet, lots of dried fruits, fruit cake, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate. The taste is bitter-sweet, roasty, earth, toast, chocolate, fruit cake, light umami and nut with a toasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Wasn’t expecting too much from this, but found it rather tasty and drinkable. "Not my kind of beer", but I rather like it.

Cask gravity at Firkin Alehouse. Black beer thin off white head. Choccy not dry not overly roasted. Fruity blackcurrant blackberry flavour. Really good. Lovely. Love the choc and fruit flavours.
