We usually do not make compromises, but this is probably the exception. Norwegians are dead scared of dark beers. This is an attempt to show that there are gentle dark ales. As such Havre Stout is smooth and drinkable.
We think Havre Stout is good both with and in food. Try pairing it with a read meet dish, or give your vanilla icecream a small dash before serving. Recommended serving temperature 8°C/45°F.

Bottle at Naboen, Bergen. Pours a black colour with a creamy medium beige head. Light aromas of coffee, roasted chocolate and some smoke. A fantastic roasted flavour with more coffee, campfire, leather, dark wood and some dark chocolate in the end. Soft and smooth mouthfeel, and a light bitterness. Wonderful, rich and easy-drinking beer with a nice roasty touch.

On tap at Express de Lyon, Paris. Black coloured, medium sized brown head, light smoked nose with hint of chocolate. Roasted malt, chocolate and coffee with mild dry bitter chocolate finish. Very smooth and enjoyable stout.

500 ml bottle from ICA Alta, batch # 750. 1.8.2012. Black with a tan, creamy head, that faded to nithing. Malty aroma with coffee and some smoked notes. Taste is light sweet. Thin body with a creamy texture. Finishes with roasted malts and some coffee. Enjoyable, but lacks alcohol and body. Good, but there are far better alternatives from Nøgne Ø (unless you are in Norwegian shops...)

500ml bottle, allowed to warm a little having come in from the outhouse, poured into a UK handled pint glass (drank Feb ’12). Pours a rich mid-black colour with a good finger of creamy brown/beige head which thins back to a half finger within a few minutes. On the nose I got sweet flavours, sugar, roasted malt, milky choclolate and a slightly toasted kind of caramel/butter/toffee aroma. On the palate caramel, toffee, sweet sugar, roasted malts finished with a bitter dry and slightly sweet aftertaste. Medium bodied stout with fairly low carbonation which provided a good creamy finish. Overall a decent stout, not quite as sweet as I was expecting but that’s no bad thing!

ICA supermarket 500ml: Pours a black color with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt and dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is much the same. The body is a little bit on the light side, but that seems to be because of the low alcohol content. This beer manages to keep a good amount of bitterness up in there in any case.

50cl bottle. Pours black with a nice beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Sweet and malty with nice chocolate flavour and a slightly dry finish. Fairly light body, goes down easy. Pretty nice stout.

Opaque black beer, short lived light brown head. Light palate. Tangy dark malt, soft and dry. Subtle peach and orange in the undertone, very subtle. Minerally dry finish. Not bad. A little brown bread and coffee in the finish.

Bottle, Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Black as night with a fast fading tan head. Nose had notes of chocolate, malts and ash. Roasty flavour with coffee, cream, malts and more choc evident. Dried out towards the finish. A lot better than anticipated. Good beer.

From a 500ml bottle on 3/5/2012 (batch number 635, brewed on 23/5/2011, best before 23/5.2013). Pours close to black with little head. Has a relatively slight chocolate malt aroma. The flavours include milk chocolate, some roasted malt, and a touch of smoke. Both the sweetness and bitterness are quite muted. The palate is a bit thin and watery. Advertised as a gentle dark ale, it’s a bit dull and unremarkable. Quite disappointing for a Nogne.

Bottle. Black colour with a tan head. Roasted malt, vanilla and coffe aroma. Well blended flavour with roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and coffe. One of the best grocery store (in Norway) beer from the power station.
