Yule is in keeping with the classic strong Scotch ale style or 'wee heavy'. But with the distinctive addition of heather flowers. It pours an enticing shade of chestnut and is a beer built around the generous malt base, with an aroma of candied fruit that ushers you to raisins. Dried apricots and caramel on the palate. The mouthfeel is decaden, with an enveloping boozy warmth to finish. It's the perfect accompaniment to those long, dark winter nights.

Can at home, from Thornbridge online, 08/01/22. Dark mahogany brown with a big ole khaki covering that stays for the show. Nose is dried fruits, spice, toffee, figs, light herb, fruit cake mix. Taste comprises fruit cake, raisins, toffee, figs, dates, brown sugar dusting, molasses, candied fruit rinds, pinch of spice. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced tickle of alcohol. Solid drop.

Can from Thornbridge Beer Club - Deep ruby brown body, off white top. Nose is spiced cake fruit, strong flowery presence, near Christmas Pudding aroma. Thick syrupy mouthfeel, taste is strong and malty, sweet and strong. Thanks to Garrold for reminding me of the Hallamshire House barrel aged darks week in 2015. That was a messy week lol

Foamy light brown head left a froth on a reddish brown body. Malt & sweet aroma. Full bodied, smooth & lively on the back. Sweet berries, malt, caramel - toffee tastes with big boozy finish.

Can. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. So glad to see this get brewed. Was fortunate enough to get the Bourbon BA version of this on cask a few years ago at the Hallamshire House and (with hindsight) it was one of the best cask beers I’d ever had. Same night there was BA Bracia on cask, too. Happy times! Anyway, enough of all that bollocks. This is vinous and malty. Big fruit. Lightly estery. Taste has sweet malt and tangy vine fruit. Smooth and easy drinking. Never feels 9%. Tangy bitterness to finish.

Cask at The 32nd White Horse Old Ale Festival 2014, Parson’s Green , London. A ruby/brown coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Malty, fruity, caramel aroma. Tastes similar, malty, fruity, caramel, Christmas spice.

Cask version at Winking Lizard’s 5th Annual Real Ale Fest (03/23/13): Deep reddish-brown color with a medium tan head that recedes slowly. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of earthy malt, fruit and caramel. Medium body with flavors of peaty malt, ripe fruit and slight hops. The finish is earthy with a dark malty aftertaste. Above average overall.

Cask at CBC Clerkenwell, London. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a fine, creamy head. Sugary, dark malts in the nose, some brown sugar, ripe fruits. Medium to big sweet flavor with lightly dry toast, dark fruit sugars, bread, mild earthy bitterness. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky sweet finish, more rich bread, light bitterness, brown sugar, dark and ripe fruits. Pretty tasty beer overall. Enjoyable.

Craft Clerkenwell. Clear dark red - amber beer, small off white head. Slightly viscous palate. Burned toffee malt with a trace of coffee. Tangy dried fruits. Finishes semi dry with mild red berry fruits. A curious brew this, more interesting than drinkable.

Cask at CP&K. It pours deep brown, with a creamy tan head. The nose is dark fruit, wood, leather, earth and candy floss. The taste is pretty damn sweet: caramel, toffee, and Scottish tablet, as well as floral, smoke, leather, wood, alcohol warmth, dark fruit, earth and sherry, with a dry finish. Full body and soft carbonation. Balance is not quite there, but it’s an interesting beer nonetheless.
