Josef Krysl has visited Marston’s Brewery, Burton upon Trent, to brew this beer especially for this JDW beer festival. Considered by many as the Czech beer guru, Josef not only develops and brews great beers, but has also helped to set up breweries worldwide. This is a classic dark beer, characterised by a taste of fresh coffee beans and dark chocolate, with hints of aniseed emerging in the finish.

Spoons Fest. Very dark red - brown beer, just about transparent. Light soft palate. Minerally dark malt start after which coffe and dark chocolate flavours develop. There is also a distinct tangyness riding along. Trace of banana peeping through at the end. Bitterness makes itself known in the aftertaste. Interesting flavours cycling round in this beer.

Cask at JDW EDINBURGH AIRPORT at 5AM before a flight to De Molen event... dark brown black ... thin tan head ... sweet cherry roast nose ... rich malt ... loads of licorice ... deep roast ... ligth bitter chocolate linger ... smooth.

Cask at the Moon and Spoon (JDW), Slough. Dark chocolate colour with a milk chocolate head; rich malty aroma; rich and dry chocolate malt flavour with a milky body; and a clean deep bitter finish. Very good.

Cask at The Penny Black, Bicester, Oxon, 07-11-09 The third of my third pints that I had had this with the Large Breakfast, as previously mentioned I always go fo the Large Breakfast and can state quite categorically that I’ve never yet completed one. Pours black with tan head, malty nose but there is also some fruit showing. Malty in flavour there is a hint of bitter dark chocolate, nice stuff. A6 A4 F6 P3 Ov13 3.3

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Black, lasting tan head. Disappointing to be honest, some faint dark amlts, faint choc. Not awful in fact very drinkable, there is nothing to be offended by here. Fine, but did it excite me? No. Some dark mid choc flavours.

[Cask at the Monks Retreat, Reading] Black with an odd yellowy head. Slight to moderate mouth-coating carbonation. Immediately drying mouthfeel. Light flavours, but there’s definitely creamy chocolate in there, and plenty of evidence of the herby Saaz hops. Growing roasty bitterness with sour hints in the finish. For a dark beer this is surprisingly light and refreshing, and pleasingly different.
