They say there’s no such thing as a free meal – but as you wind your way through wooded hills towards the tiny village of Cranborne, you might chance upon a charming rogue who says differently.

For years, the Cranborne Poacher has roamed these parts, outwitting both authority and prey in pursuit of pilfered plums and a pheasant for his pot.

Crystal and chocolate malts provide a full-bodied taste with sweet, complex flavours of damson and liquorice.

Bottle from Tesco. Clear copper pour with a thin head and a little lace. Just as it says on the label. Lots of fruity damsons which is the overriding flavour with a hint of liquorice on the palate. A wonderful and quite unusual ale which is adored by most people who taste it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Potent and sweet smell of liquorice, similar flavour and its medium body goes down well.

0.5l bottle. Crystal clear in the pour, and it has a light nutty-brown color with a small lacing just off-white head. Actually a bit exciting on the aroma. Lot's of fruity tones here. It actually smells a bit like fruity bubblegum. Quite sweet, but nice. It has a oily texture in the mouth and it's average carbonated. The taste is even more bubblegum-like, and spicy! Not hot, but more strange-spicy. Some sort of ginger-root or something? This could easily have been a fruit or spice-beer. Ends light mouthdrying in the soapy finish, next with hints of bitter coffee, licorice and even some chocolate. Interesting one, but not exceptional good. 20.07.2012

Pours deep ruby with a small quickly fading head.Nose shows confectionery-like grape notes, I suppose from the damson. There’s some faint liquorice and soft caramel too. Mostly just the grape/bubblegum note though.Similarly fruity taste, very sweet and grape-like. Not much behind it.Could use a little more carbonation.

July 2008: This beer contains Malted Barley, Wheat and Sulphates. A warning or a advertising ploy? Anyway my brown 500ml bottle with its best before date rubbed out was poured into a Westmalle Trappist Challice (twice). The off white head that appeared as I poured soon left to leave a thin wisp and collar. The body of the beer was a lovely red mahogany and very clear. The initial aroma was of a dirty farmyard, luckily that soon dispersed and a fruity (red berries, plums and Honey Melon) took over. Liquorice also appeared in the rich heady mix as the beer warmed. The liquorice became the dominant flavour for me, it was also fairly sweet, so the plums and melon in the aroma came through into the taste too. You would never guess this beer had 5.7% alcohol, it doesn’t have the body or presence to indicate that amount. Nor is it rich or creamy in any way. It is however a pleasant beer and one I would happily offer the visitors. I have just read the label in more detail and they have used liquorice and damons in the brew. Hey, I’m obviously getting the hang of this reviewing lark.

17/IV/2012 - 500ml bottle @ Klaas' place - BB: X/12 (2012-386) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle!

Clear amber to copper red beer, small off-white head, unstable, pretty adhesive. Aroma: very sweet, cherry liquor, wine gums, strawberry jam. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of fruity wine gum flavours and sweet gummy bears, raspberry and strawberry jame, little bitter, some lemon juice. Aftertaste: sweet and bitter, more wine gums with a touch of wine gums and some wine gums. But man, it's pretty good, it actually works! Very surprised about the low rating...

Bottle from Waitrose in London. Pours copper with a 3 finger beige head. Deep, rich aroma of ripe plum. Starts fairly sweet with background bitter. It’s not simply arranged. It’s malty, plum fruity, and has a herb of some sort. There is bitter, but it’s not a bitter drink, unless the herb is counted in. Interesting.
