Brewed since 1985. It is a top fermentation beer with refermentation in the bottle. Color: dark red-brown beer. Taste: very subtle taste, mixture of fruit, herbs and caramel flavor without one of them becoming predominant with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

330ml bottle: BBD Jan 18. Poured into a Chimay chalice at home on 18th Mar 17. Deep, ruby red in colour, full and lasting tanned uneven blanket of bubbles for a head. Lovely malty nose and taste with a light bitterness that suits the malty base. Does the bitterness come from hops or from the over roasted/toasted malts? I don’t know, most likely the hop content. Really enjoyed it. Obtained from Mat at Chez Sophie some time ago.

33cl bottle. As Ambiorix Bruin. Poured brown color, murky, dense white head. Floral hops, caramelly aroma, green tea notes. Really pleasant. Flavor has tea, caramel, sugars, floral notes. Surprisingly thin for the abv. High drinkability, I like this one, even if dubbel is not a style I prefer.

One of those old school Slaghmuylder beers, not sure if this is still made, rated from old notes. A dark chestnut brown beer with pale beige, moussy head and malty character with some dried fruits, walnuts and biscuit in the nose; malty and restrained fruity taste, sweetish with a hint of candi sugar as well as a certain sourishness, dryish finish with herbal hops and a touch of warming alcohol. Tasted its new incarnation yesterday too, for comparison with these old tasting notes, and it seems to have become even better than it was, adding umami-like hints of cooked beef and fried mushrooms, as well as more toasted maltiness, providing more bitterness than I remember from the old version. My rating here is an average of both.
