Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. Best enjoyed while pumping out blast beats, summoning trolls, or enjoying a nice, leisurely reading of the Necronomicon.

Black Metal takes inspiration from both the English and Franco-Belgian brewing traditions. We combine English specialty malts with well water, local base malt from our friends at Blacklands, and wild fermentation with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria.

Admin Note: In 2015, Jester King released the first batch (Batch 16) of Black Metal brewed using the brewery’s house mixed culture of microorganisms consisting of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the air and wildflowers around the brewery. The previous batches of Farmhouse Black Metal was brewed using a French Saison yeast.

From tap at Oersoep Craft Beer Festival, Nijmegen. Aroma of sour dark fruits, malt, caramel, chocolate, some roast, light funk, coffee. Flavour is medium sour with a hint of sweetness. Interesting and tasty beer!

On tap @Kool Keg in Arlington. Tulip. Not quite black pour with a rich cocoa head. Soft coffee, savory smoke & gentle chocolate. All earth & baker's chocolate upfront. Smooth & sweet coffee, soot, carob, untoasted brown bread. Faint whiskey throughout. Chewy, yeasty, mellow, hidden abv. Not what I expected, but good.

Dark brown, not much head. A bit toasty, burnt molasses, on the palate lots of dark fruitiness, plums, again a bit of molasses. Decent.

Taster on Weathered. Appearance: black, weak dark brown head. Aroma: roasted malts, quite dry. Taste: along the same lines, quite roasty, a bit sour, but mostly on the roasted malt side. Overall: good one.
