English-style barleywine ale aged in bourbon barrels.

There are many storms out there, all of them perfect in their own way. But there is only one Mother of all Storms and it only happens in Pacific City, Oregon. Based on Stormwatcher’s Winterfest, our English-style barleywine, Mother of all Storms spent many months aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Now at its peak, Mother of all Storms delivers deep flavors of toasted malt, bourbon and oak. The finish rewards with whispers of vanilla, toffee and caramel. Best enjoyed with gusts exceeding 60 mph.

At Rich’s Massive Cellar Emptying Tasting. Mother of all storms pelican 2010 13.5% Deep reddish brown with a malty rich stone fruit, maple syrup and some heat. Med-full bodied with a scratchy carbonation and big heat. The taste is malty sweet fruit, whiskey and heat. It’s an alright big ass beer.

Rating from 2011 at Stockholm beer. This was wonderful, deep black colour, full aroma and great barrel aged taste.

Bottle @ ZEBF 2015. Aroma of raisin and vanilla. Taste has lots of malty raisin, sweet ripe red fruit, vanilla and mild bitters. Nice wedding of barley wine and port.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/3/2013. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense tan head with poor retention, that reduces to a thin ring pretty quickly. Some minimal spotty lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, prune, fig, date, caramel, molasses, toffee, toast, brown bread, bourbon, oak, light vanilla, light tobacco, and oak/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and oak barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, molasses, toffee, toast, brown bread, raisin, prune, fig, date, bourbon, oak, leather, tobacco, light vanilla, light chocolate, and oak/toasted earthiness. Slight oaky bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, molasses, brown bread, raisin, prune, fig, date, bourbon, oak, leather, tobacco, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and oak barrel flavors; with zero cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light carbonation and full bodied; with a very creamy, fairly slick, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a small-moderate warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged English barelywine style. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and oak barrel flavors; and fairly smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. A highly enjoyable offering, but I feel that the base beer is more impressive than this one.

Poured from a 2012 vintage 22 oz bottle. Aroma had a medium light bourbon character. Moderate raisin and dark fruit notes with lighter toffee and caramel notes. Light toast character with hints of smoke. Light alcohol spice and light cardboard oxidation. Hints of soy sauce. Pours a dark, murky, brown with some amber hues and a moderately sized, somewhat thin, mocha head with average retention that lingers on the edges. Light lacing and moderate legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with moderate toffee and caramel notes. Lighter roast and faint smoke with light chocolate. Moderate to moderately strong raisin, prune and dark fruit. Light bourbon and alcohol spice. Medium cardboard oxidation with light soy sauce. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low also warmth. Overall, this beer has not aged well. The dark fruit and oxidation are showing through and not helping this beer at all. Nice dark fruit and bourbon notes though.

2012 bottle purchased from Let’s Pour. Dark brown body with almost a head, but not quite. Rich, complex aroma. Alcohol, cognac, maple sugar, raisins. Very sweet and syrupy. Flavor otherwise matches the aroma. Gotta sip this one slow like an Avery.

22 oz. bottle 2012 vintage shared by Phatdog1. Dark mahogany color with no head. Aroma is damn nice with the flavor to match. Nose of toasted caramel, burnt molasses, vanilla oak, and dried dark fruits. The bourbon is barely noticeable but still there.

Flavor is rich and has a layered complexity. Toffee, figs and thick molasses upfront. Mild oak vanilla and raisin through the center leading to a subtle, gentle bourbon in the finish. The bourbon is a nice accent to all the deep layers of malts. A nice warming sensation after the sip. Thick nearly sticky texture. Overall this is a killer barely wine, delicious!
