Yearly, ending in 2017, we brewed Fluxus to celebrate the anniversary of our first beer sold—July, 1995. The name Fluxus is Latin for “continuous change” and in the spirit of change, every year we brew Fluxus with a different recipe.

Allagash Fluxus is a beer of continuous change. Brewed differently every year to commemorate our anniversary, this year’s Fluxus is a porter brewed with a blend of 2-row, coffee and chocolate malts with blood orange pulp and zest. It was hopped using Perle, Tettnang and Glacier varieties. It was then fermented with a Belgian Abbey yeast.

The resulting beer is dark brown in color with chocolate and roasted notes throughout the flavor and aroma. The blood orange has a subtle presence in the aroma and the zest expresses itself in the mouth-drying finish by leaving a lingering bitterness. This full bodied ale was the creation of Allagash brewer Patrick Saville, lover of heavy metal, beer and all things dark.

Bottle thanks to Ken. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The nose is soy sauce, black bean noodles, pseudo Asian cuisine and toasted sesame seed. The taste is roasted malt, toast, cardboard, paper, earth, watery aspect, burnt notes and dirt with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty disappointing......

Draught at Publick House, December 2013
Large, quickly receding sienna-colored head tops a black body that has deep mahogany tints on the edges.
Dark chocolate, roast and touches of base malt (vanilla, cream) are plentiful and overall quite dry in the nose. If you’re looking for the orange, I suppose it’s there in the form of a lightly juicy citrus, but you’re not really going to find it, otherwise, amidst the roasted barley and floral/lightly citric hoppiness. Still, this is a nicely attenuated porter that lets the malt do the talking, with much less emphasis on any Belgian yeast character. No heavy esters or fusels here.
Quite ordinarily porterish, in the mouth, not to say boring, but rather, nearly a well-constructed American rendition, with plenty of bitterness from the dark malts including notes of coffee and dry chocolate. A soft, supple, nearly oily texture is bolstered by an engaging carbonation, and a bit of juicy, though tame hoppiness (floral, lightly grassy) sits on the finish. Again, it’s always good to tend towards the side of caution when brewing with adjuncts and this is certainly done cautiously. Wouldnt mind a bit more of the blood orange, though. It only slightly emerges on the finish, as a citric bitterness afterthought.

Bottle from CraftShack. Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aromas of chocolate and citrus. Med body or better. Flavor is very orange/citrus with treacle and chocolate. Maybe coffee. With foreknowledge the blood orange is detectable. This stuff finishes rather dry and tasty. Excellent ale.
