Kopi Luwak is one of the World's most expensive and rare coffee varieties. The beans are specifically selected for their ripeness and quality by the civet, a small jungle marsupial that feeds off the fruit of the coffee cherry. They are then gathered by humans from the jungle floors of Indonesia, thoroughly cleaned, and sun-dried. A precise roasting by San Diego's Ryan Bros. Coffee leads to an extremely aromatic and an exceptionally smooth final product that complements this barrel-aged imperial stout amazingly well. Good to the last dropping.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks troganmi for this bottle! Black with a foamy light brown head. Aroma of bourbon, coffee, vanilla, a bit of coconut, dark fruits and dark chocolate. Bittersweet flavor, liqueuer-like, with roast, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, raisins, prunes and a bitterish, slightly alcoholic and slightly vinous finish. Full rounded mouthfeel. Great stuff.

On tap at the brewery. Ara is very balanced with quite a bit of chocolate and roast, but with complimentary medium light coffee notes and medium barrel character adding notes of bourbon and vanilla. Pours black with a thick mocha head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers. Faint lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor has a nice medium roast note with moderate coffee character. Medium barrel notes with some light vanilla. Moderate chocolate character with some medium light bitterness and medium alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a really nice barrel aged coffee stout with balanced notes of coffee, bourbon and the base beer. Nice vanilla and bourbon notes with a good coffee character.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of deep roasted barley malt with notes of dry coffee with some hazelnut notes with light bourbon undertones which rounds off some of the rough edges. Taste is a mix between some dry roasted malt notes with coffee notes and some hazelnut and bourbon notes which helps rounds off the flavours. Body is quite full with good carbonation and nice creamy body and no apparent alcohol. This is definitely one of the best versions of Speedway that I have ever tried. All the flavours are well balanced and don’t clash between each other’s. The complexity level is quite high but the drinkability is also quite high.

Bottle with thanks to Cocoapuph! Pours opaque black with a small tan head that dissipates fairly quickly with some lacing. Aroma is pretty strong espresso, roast, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla. Light plus sweet and only lightly bitter, with light woody astringency. Full bodied and rich. Fairly hot, but otherwise a very good blend of stout and barrel that clearly exceeds the original.
