Kopi Luwak is one of the World's most expensive and rare coffee varieties. The beans are specifically selected for their ripeness and quality by the civet, a small jungle marsupial that feeds off the fruit of the coffee cherry. They are then gathered by humans from the jungle floors of Indonesia, thoroughly cleaned, and sun-dried. A precise roasting by San Diego's Ryan Bros. Coffee leads to an extremely aromatic and an exceptionally smooth final product that complements this barrel-aged imperial stout amazingly well. Good to the last dropping.

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Big thanks to Paul for this moby dick. Opaque dark brown - black beer. Big paleish tan head. Softish palate, airy and a little dry. Mild fine carbonation. Rich malt, slightly bitter and with a touch of licorice. Mild spice. Intense coffee, somewhat bitter. Touch of barrel induced paint. Mellow dark fruits. Finishes smooth and dry. Rich but a touch harsh.

Bottle shared at Jack’s Farwell Tasting, massive thanks to Paolo for unearthing a top draw Impy want, 06/08/13. Mid black with a big dirty tan head that retains well - this chap indeed looks ’the bollocks’! Nose is roast malt forward, dark chocolate, coffee, dark malts, toffee. Taste comprises light boozey tones, dark chocolate, subtle coffee notes, oak, bourbonic tones, earthy, light minerals. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light warming booze in the finish. Great stuff - a decadent impy for sure, the alcohol was very well integrated. My only grumble - I’d have liked a touch more coffee as I do enjoy a good coffee blast, but I can see why this one is so highly rated in that the subtleness of the Kopi Luwak will win over those not ordinarily a fan of coffee in beer.

Bottle via trade, shared at Jack’s farewell tasting. It pours black with a medium tan head. The nose is earth, rich-roast, coffee, vanilla, toasted coconut, sweet lactose, creamy and rocky road. The taste is roasty, earth, plenty of coffee, cocoa, fudge, light toast, charred wood, tablet, caramel, chocolate powder and dark fruit. Full body, moderate carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Damn tasty and dangerously drinkable. A well-crafted brew indeed.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London during Jack’s farewell tasting. Massive thanks to Paul for hunting the WhaleSmith. Pours deep brown-black with a thick, creamy beige head. The aroma holds heavy dark malts, chocolate cake, raisins. Medium to big sweet flavor, lots of sugary dark chocolate, fairly mellow coffee, plenty of dark fruits. Full bodied with fine, tingly carbonation. Warming finish with strong but balanced out dark malt character, rich chocolate, a bit of alcohol, some espresso, rich bread. Great stuff.

From a 750ml bottle. Poured a rich and stark black color, like silky oil, nice small brown head. Aroma was rich, creamy chocolates, light sweet coffee, bourboun. Flavor was smooth chocolate bourbon, brandy notes. Quite a solid brew. Alcohol is completely hidden in this one.

Bottle at Sour & Bitter #2, pours black with a small tan / brown head. Aroma of heavy bourbon barrels, potent coffee, and alcohol -- exceedingly complex, but doesn't seem that different from regular BA Speedway Stout. Flavour definitely tastes richer than regular BA Speedway Stout, with exceedingly complex coffee notes, followed by bourbon barrels, moderate roast, and wood. Amazingly complex, and perhaps my favourite of all Speedway Stout renditions. While the nose is similar to regular BA Speedway, the coffee is more pungent on the nose, adding another dimension. Insanely complex and such a pleasure to sip. World class.

Trying this one side by side with the regular Kopi Luwak (non BA)
A - Pours thin and not oily, half a finger leather like head. Not as thick as I expected.
S - Coyingly sweet nose, lots of vanilla, sort of earthy
T - sweet, vanilla, bourbon is strong at first and then fades to this very nutty earthy coffee taste. i get some heavy leather. I get really fresh toffee
M - Medium body, roasted sweet finish
O - Impressive but I think the bourbon takes away from the exceptional regular Kopi Luwak. The bean is so great and to barrel age this is weird and a bummer.
