Ola Dubh, meaning ‘Black Oil’ in Gaelic, is craftily created by taking our Old Engine Oil and maturing it in 16 year old Highland Park whisky casks. The process is far from simple, but the result is a beautiful brew with complimentary whisky notes and caramel shining through. All thanks to the labour of love of our master brewers.
Hops: East Kent Goldings, Fuggles, Galena
Malts: Lager Malt, Pinhead Oats, Roast Barley
Ola Dubh 16yr tasting notes: On the nose, Ola Dubh 16 has aromas of whisky and sweet roasted malt. The whisky forward flavour is rich with coffee, chocolate and caramel notes all shining through. This ale strikes a sensational balance of fruity sweetness with a complex bitter hop background.

Bottle at home from the Wine Society. A flat pour with no head and no lacing. The taste was that of a rich porter and again I didn't get much, if anything, of the whisky and oaky vanilla that I was expecting. Meh.

Thick, black colored, small- tan head, not very lasting. Aroma is of malt, bit caramel, light toffee, chocolate, bit coffee, whisky barrel and peaty notes. Taste is medium+ sweet malt, caramel, bit toffee, bit chocolate, whisky barrel, smoke and peat, some alcohol and warmth. Medium+ bodied, soft to flat carbonation, feels a bit thinner than you'd expect. I did age it past the BB date by a few days! :o (bottle, Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte)

0.33 l bottle from 'Ace Drinks', bottled in June 2014. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, moderately roasty and slightly smoky aroma of dark chocolate, licorice, peat, hazelnut and some whisky. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty, quite smoky taste of dark chocolate, licorice, peat, seaweed, hazelnut and whisky, followed by a medium long, rather roasty-bitter, slightly earthy-dry and fairly smoky finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Really good, fantastically balanced, fairly complex and extremely pleasant to drink!

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 33B/20C). Bottle 33 cl - Batch L2602 (BBF 02/2019). AROMA: medium blend between roasted malts (cocoa/coffee) and whisky wood barrel. APPERANCE: very dark brown to black with slight ruby highlights against light. medium light brown head with average retention. leg formation. TASTE: similar to the aroma, with a front flavor of smoky wood, slight whisky and a background of roasted malt (coffee). medium bitterness with a smi-dry and roasty finish. PALATE: medium-full to full body with meidum carbonation. OVERALL: a very interesting and flavourfull imperial stout agend in whisky barrels.

I bought this from South Bay D&L. Thanks Joey!
I really liked the SR 12 so here goes:
With a very vigorous pour at close to room temp, there's a 1 finger of tan foam with some nice lacing. It's close to pitch black but I see some redish highlights at the bottom of my glass. Hehe...looks like some good head retention.
The smell has notes of caramel, dark fruit, some smoke(more than in the 12), and just a touch of whisky.
The taste is pretty smokey on first sip with some notes of caramel, a pretty big coffee flavour, some hot cocoa bitterness, and just a touch of the whiskey. Nice. It has a full silky mouthfeel at first but that fades to more of a medium mouthfeel mid palate with very light carbonation, and the alcohol is well hidden.
This one's a pretty smooth sipper despite the larger smoke profile but it, imho, isn't as complex as the 12 and I'm definitely leaning towards the 12 when it comes to how much it satisfies my palate. Still good stuff and I'm glad I got to try it. Appearance wise, this definitely was more appealing.
